It acquired this nickname during the 1990s because of the concentration of firms specialising in Research and Development (R&D), electronics and software production in the city. The nickname has been derived from the original Silicon Valley based around Santa Clara Valley, California. It is a major hub for IT companies in the United States. Bangalore is home to about 2,347 IT companies as 2007, records. Some of the prominent IT companies located in Bangalore are Infosys, Wipro, iGate, Tata Consultancy Services, Accenture, Google, IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Yahoo, Oracle Corporation, Cisco, Microsoft and Intel. As of 2006–07 IT firms contributed 33% of India's Rs. 144,214 crore (US$ 32 billion) IT exports.
