The Largest known Asteroid is Ceres'. It has a diameter of about 950 km (590 mi). It contains 25% of the mass of all the Asteroids combined and contains almost 32% (a third) of the belt's total mass. It was discovered by Giuseppe Piazzi, an Italian astronomer 1st January, 1801. He named it Ceres, the Roman goddess of growing plants, the harvest, and motherly love.
