Originally a Japanese comic strip created by Machiko Hasegawa it was created into animated series and was first telecast in October 1969 by Fuji Television. On November 16, 2008, the series' 3000th episode was broadcast in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the animated series.
There are about 6500 episodes of the series.
The series is about the day-to-day comedic activities of the extended Isono family: Fune and Namihei, their three children Sazae, Katsuo and Wakame, Sazae's husband Masuo Fuguta, and their child Tarao.
The show is also the last television anime to use traditional Cel Animation, although as of April 2009, the opening credits were digital.
