The Canaan Dog is the 'National Dog Breed of Israel'. It is one of the oldest known breeds of pariah dog and is often called a biblical dog as it is the same breed of dog mentioned in the bible. It was the Canaan that Jesus and Moses turned their heads towards its barking. Archaeological evidence backs this fact - skeletons of more than 700 dogs from the 5th century B.C. have been discovered south of Tel Aviv. 1st-century rock carvings in the Sinai also add up to this evidence.
Despite being a historical breed, it is neglected by the local government. The purity of its genes is diminishing due to breeding with other stray dogs. But outside of Israel it is an important breed of dog recognised by the American Kennel Club.
