During 1801, especially after the discovery of Ceres, various similar bodies were discovered which looked like points of light, like stars, showing little or no planetary disc. This inspired Sir William Herschel, a British astronomer to propose the term 'Asteroid' which means 'Star-Like'. It was derived from Greek word 'Asteroeides', in which 'Aster' means a Star and 'Eidos' means a Form or Shape. The term was coined in 1802.
