The Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, named Pacific Ocean. In the 1500's Magellan claimed of a western route to the Spice Islands through a seaway near the southern tip of South America. On his way he and his crew came across beautiful and peaceful Ocean. Magellan called it 'Pacific Ocean' which means 'Peaceful Ocean'.
