Bhakra Nangal Dam was given the Title of 'New Temple of Resurgent India' because Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of India, considered it a symbol of India’s progress. Nehru also said that the Dam had been built with sheer hard work of man and for the benefit of man himself, therefore it was worthy of worship. The multi purpose Bhakra Project which includes (apart from Bhakra Dam), the Nangal Dam, Nangal Hydel Channel, Ganguwal and Kotla Power Houses contributed towards ample progress of North India.
