Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse, who was a hindu extremist. Godse felt that Gandhi was responsible for the partition of India in 1947 and the creation of Pakistan. It is also believed that godse was angry when Gandhi agreed to give 520 million rupees to the newly formed Pakistan. Godse was opposed to this decision as he believed Pakistan had achieved independence by inciting religious animosity between hindus and muslims, thus destabilizing the whole region.
