About Punjab Engineering College

The Punjab Engineering College (Deemed University) Chandigarh was originally established as Mugalpura Engineering College at Lahore (now in Pakistan) on November 9, 1921. The name of the college was later changed to Maclagan Engineering College and its started functioning under the name on March 19, 1924. In the year 1931, the college got affiliated to Punjab University, Lahore. After partition in 1947, the college was shifted to Roorkee (India) and was renamed as East Punjab College of Engineering. In the year 1950 the word East was dropped and it came to know by its present name - Punjab Engineering College.

Towards the end of December 1953, the college shifted to its present campus in Chandigarh to function under Govt. of Punjab. In 1966, with the formation of Union Territory of Chandigarh, the college same under control of Govt. of India through Chandigarh Administration. In October 2003, the Govt. of India notified the Punjab Engineering College as a Deemed to be University. The college campus extends over an area of 146 acres of the land situated close to the beautiful Shivalik hills. The campus is divided into various functional zones like hostels, Main College Building, Administration Block, Residential Complex for staff and faculty and a shopping centre.

Presently there are eleven post-graduate courses leading to Masters of Engineering degree in Highways, Structures, Hydraulics and Irrigation, Rotodynamic Machines, Electrical Power Systems, Environmental Engineering (Interdisciplinary), Electronics Metallurgical Engineering and C.I.M. Facilities for post-graduate studies exist for regular as well as for part time students .The college has facilities for research work leading to the award of Ph.D. degree in engineering in certain selected fields of different disciplines. The college also offers consultancy services in different disciplines.

Location - The college is situated in Sector 12 at the north end of Chandigarh. The premises of the college is within a few minutes walk from the Punjab and Haryana Civil Secretariat, the Panjab University, Post graduate Institute Of Medical Education And Research (PGI).

Facilities

Hostels - There are four hostels for boys namely Shivalik (1st Year students), Himalaya (2nd Year and 3rd Year students), Kurukshetra (Final Year) students, and Aravali (M.E. students) and two hostels for girls named Kalpana Chawla hostel (B.E. girls) and Vindhya (M.E. girls). Each hostel is self contained with amenities such as reading room, indoor games room, lounge and dining hall and a mess.

The provost Chief Warden of hostels) is the in charge of the hostels organizations. He is assisted by additional chief warden of hostels, hostel wardens and mess presidents. The discipline in the hostel is looked by the proctor of the college. Hostel accommodation will be provided for all students and residence in the hostels is obligatory. The students who opt to stay with their parents/guardians in the city, may be allowed to do so with the permission of the principal on the basis of a written undertaking form the parents/guardians to the fact that they will take part in all the extra-curricular activities of the college.

PEC's Open Course Ware - Academia PEC has been designed, developed and set up successfully last year which is used for uploading the academic courseware by all the faculty members of the institute and extensively used by the students to get a 24 hour access to the courseware.The project was developed by students of the department under the able guidance of the faculty member of the department of Computer Science & Engineering

Computer Centre - The computer centre is the central point where the Fiber optic from Rail Tel terminates for Internet connectivity (8 Mbps, 1:1), and further emanates to the 16 departments. The existing college network has Fiber Optic & ATM backbone whereby 16 departments are connected with the computer centre.

Computer Centre provides computational facilities to all users in the Institute. Eligible students, staff and faculty from all Departments, Schools and Centers in the campus can obtain accounts on the High End Systems. CC provides electronic mail, world wide web, and other services. CC also provides various advanced and special purpose software's as well as different operating systems, for all the campus users. The Centre remains open from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm on weekdays and 9:00am to 5:00 pm on Saturdays.The Computer Centre, at present consists of the network infrastructure, like switches, hubs and PEC web-identity (www.pec.ac.in) Centre also houses cluster of Linux & Window2000 based servers for mailing (http://mail.pec.ac.in), Internet bandwidth management, firewall.

Central Library
- The central library, PEC (DU), is housed in an area of about 27000 sq. feet and organized into various sections, which are manned by professionally qualified staff. With a collection of about 1,08,028 volumes in science and technology, catering to the needs of about 2000 members (both staff and students), imparting / perusing studies in nine different branches of branches of engineering, it continuously acquires text and reference books. To keep its readers abreast with the latest developments in Engineering & Technology, the library is subscribing to 72 foreign and 18 indian technical journals in the print form. The library is a member of INDEST consortium under the Ministry of HRD since 2003. This consortium provides access to electronic resources i.e. IEL (IEEE), ASME & ASCE.

Having centrally air-conditioning facility with 250 seats in two spacious reading halls for reticent of its readers, the library functions from 9 AM to 8 PM / 11 PM with an open access system to maximize the use of library resources. The Central Library is also having Multimedia Section to make use of most popular mode of education i.e. Electronic Media with the help of Computer, LCD projector, TV, VCR, OHP, Slide projector, CD, Floppy and collections of 450 CDs, 76 floppies and 581 Video Cassettes on various disciplines of technology. Online network connection has already been given to the library.

The database of Circulation Section, Reference Section and Theses Section have been prepared using LibSys Software. The same are accessible through library webpage in the campus. The issue/return of documents using bar code technology will start in next session.

Training & Placement Cell - To co-ordinate in the placement proceedings a student body of the Placement Committee is also formulated. PEC is proud of its students who have been serving the nation in various capacities ranging from CEOs, Chief Secretaries, Industrialists, Human Right Activists, and Entrepreneurs to Astronauts. Some companies who have recruited students are ABB Limited, Alcatel, Alstom (T & D), Alstom Power, Ashok Leyland Ltd. etc. The goal of Training & Placement Cell is to provide employment opportunities & world class training to PEC students in leading organizations.

TRAINING - It arranges training for students in industries for 4 weeks at the end of 4th Semester and 6th Semester. Production Engineering Department students undergo Six months training. The students of the college undergo their training at various prestigious organizations. The students act as a channel of communication with the industries.

PLACEMENTS - All the reputed organizations including MNCs are coming to the College for campus recruitment. To achieve its goal, the Training & Placement Cell works towards recognizing the core competencies of students. It works through a close knit organization and has a structure which conveys information to the students at the fastest possible rate. A common placement brochure for all branches is published.

The Training & Placement Cell firmly believes in 'Industry-Institute Interaction'. In order to accomplish 'Industry-Institute Interaction', it organizes technical talks and national seminars to provide a platform for the budding engineers to interact with professionals from various industries. It encourages visits to the industries by the college students. It arranges for industrial problems to be worked on by students as part of their projects. It also takes suggestions from members of industry regarding designing/changing of curriculum. The college has signed MOUs with many industrial organizations and industrial chambers. Technical paper presentation contests are held in collaboration with industries to discuss new developments and trends.

Medical Facilities - The college has its own dispensary where the medical facilities exist for the students and staff members. A duly-qualified staff and proper stock of medicines have been ensured by the college authorities. In addition to the day-to-day attendance to ailments, special attention is paid to the health of the students. The severe cases are referred to the adjoining Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences. All the students are medically examined at least once a year by the College Medical Officer and Standard Physico-Medical Record of such students maintained.

Sports - The Institute has several playgrounds and well-maintained athletic track to encourage the students to take part in different games such as Cricket, Hockey, Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Lawn Tennis and Badminton.The Institute has also a Gymnasium-cum-Badminton Hall and a Swimming Pool Complex equipped with all modern facilities.

Societies - For the all round development of the student , the college provides a host of various students activities . These activities range from sports , personal-hobbies to technical interests . The students are encouraged to become the member of these bodies to help broaden their horizons . These student bodies not only help the students explore their hidden talent but also help in areas such as personality development and inculcating in the students the spirit of organization by providing them with a platform for hosting their respective club presentations.

The popular ones among these include CROTCHET (Inter College Music Competition) organized by Music Club , The Projection Week organized by Projection Club , Interactive Session organized by Rotary Club, Pecmag - the annual magazine released by Ed-Board ,Panache organized by Arts & Photography Club, Blood Donation Camps organized by the NSS , the annual sports meet organized by NCC and Department of Sports . Other than these we have the annual college events - PECFEST and the Club Function organized by all the respective clubs and associations of the college under the active super-vision of the College Student Council .

Counseling Services - The office of the counseling services at PEC aims at helping students reach their highest academic and personal potential. This may involve helping with personal, learning and career concerns and promoting success and wellness among them. This office provides a confidential atmosphere in which students can explore any topic or situation and discuss any concerns they may have. The students are helped to work through their problems, to develop self awareness, and to over come problems. The office of the student counseling services at PEC offers free and confidential counseling to students on individual or group basis. Arrangements are beings made to have professional counselors available for personal counseling. The office is also planning to have workshops and presentations on a variety of psychological issues. In order to receive counseling students may walk in the office of the DSW to schedule an appointment with the counselors. Students’ referrals from peers, faculty or staff are also welcome.

Pecfest - PEC festival is the annual PEC fête organized by the students. It is the biggest event of the college attracting many sponsors and including all kinds of events - technical events, quizzes, workshops, game shows, concerts (aka Rock Night), fashion shows, and a city level beauty pageant.

Achievements


1.  In 1994 this institution was adjudged the best technical college in India by the National Foundation of Engineers.

2.  The institute is the Alma mater of the Space Shuttle Columbia astronaut, the late Kalpana Chawla, North American actor Remi Kaler and the satirist Jaspal Bhatti among many others.

3.  PEC Ranking - Hindustan Times Group's MINT C-FORE survey has rated Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh , 16th amongst the top 50 Government Engineering Colleges in India including IITs and NITs. The rating is based on Intellectual Capital, Pedagogic Systems & Process, Industry Interface, Placement and Infrastructure and Support Systems of PEC.
