National Institute of Technology, Srinagar is one of the premier Educational Institutes in the Northern Region of the country. It was established in 1960 and was one of the first 8 Regional Engineering Colleges established in India during the first Five Year Plan. It is one of the 18th Regional Engineering Colleges sponsored by the Govt. of India during the 2nd Plan. The Institute acquired the status of National Institute of Technology with deemed to be University status during August, 2003 and attained full autonomy in its Academics. In the same year, the Institution was granted Deemed University status with the approval of the University Grants Commission, All India Council of Technical Education and the Government of India. On August 15th, 2007 it became an Institute of National Importance under the NIT Bill. Besides running the B.Tech. Programme the Institute also offers M.Tech. programme in many streams. In addition, a large number of students are registered for M.Phil. and Ph.D. Programmes.
Location - The Institute is situated at the the banks of world-famous Dal Lake, near Hazratbal Shrine, about 8 kilometres from the Tourist Reception Centre (where all airport buses and other long route/sight seeing buses/coaches originate/terminate), on other side of the campus. Facilities
Hostels - NIT Srinagar is a residential Institute with accommodation facility in Hostels and Staff-Quarters. There are four Boys and one Girls Hostel which accommodates about 1500 boys and 200 girls. The University also provides separate mess facility. All the Hostels are well maintained and are equipped with all necessary facilities. Library - The Library has a collection of about 68,000 books of Engineering, Science, Humanities and about 6,000 bound volumes of Journals, both foreign and Indian.The Library has good collection of CD's and video-cassettes on engineering, science & technology and is on the path of this collection further. The Library has a separate collection for SC/ST students having 10,000 books. Books are issued for full semester to SC/ST students.The Library has an online access to ASCE, ASME, ASPT, IEL, JCCC etc. journals through INDEST Consortium and has a complete collection of ISI codes in CD Rom format. The Library is connected to IGNOU Educational programmes. The Library has switched over to an open-source Integrated Library System (ILS).
Medical Facilities - The University has Two story Medical Unit with 24 hours medical facility within campus with a full time doctor and other paramedical staff. Medical lab facilities available in the campus, such as ECG, X-Ray etc.
Sports and Games - The University provides facilities for various indoor and outdoor games. There is a common hall, activity centre for the indoor games, cultural activities and other activities such as gym etc. Facilities for outdoor games like hand ball, volley ball, cricket, football, hockey, tennis etc. are also available.
Industry Interaction Cell - The Institution has an Industry Interaction Cell which was established in 1989 with the aim to remain at the fore-front on the Scientific and Technological development and to share its experience with industries in utilizing.
Training & Placement - The alumni of this College are well placed in various reputed organizations both within the country and abroad. Some of the reputed companies who have made campus placements from this Institution and are continuously visiting are NTPC, ABB, Power Grid, ALSTOM, TCS, SATYAM, WIPRO, DRDO, Honda Motors, L&T etc.
Conference Hall - It is equipped with Audio, multimedia computer and LCD Projection facilities. It has a seating capacity of 100 for pre-placement presentations and other activities.
Other Facilities - Other amenities include Post and Telegraph, Telecom Centre, a branch of the Jammu & Kashmir Bank, an ATM, Canteen, Cafeteria, Coffee Vending Machines, Stationery Shops, General Stores, and Co-operative Stores.
Techvaganza - Techvaganza is an annual 3 day science and technology festival held in April. There are exhibitions and display of technology from all parts of India in the festival. The festival is organised, financially managed and conducted entirely by the students of the Institute. The festival receives sponsorship from companies.
