University of Jammu came into existence in 1969 vide Kashmir and Jammu Universities Act 1969, following bifurcation of the erstwhile University of Jammu and Kashmir. The University occupies a 118.70 acre on the left bank of the river Tawi. It has two residential campuses - New Campus at Bahu Wali Rakh, with an area of about 118.70, acres and another Small Old Campus at Canal Road, having an area of 10.5 acres. It is primarily a research, teaching, affiliating and examining body involved in promotion of arts, science and other branches of learning. It holds examinations, grants degrees and confers diverse academic distinctions. It also confers honorary degrees or other distinctions to the deserving candidates. The University also admits, maintains, recognizes and affiliates colleges and other institutions. The University also has satellites centres at Billawar, Reasi and at Patnitop to cater the needs of students at their doorsteps. It is establishing its new campuses at Poonch and Ramnagar. The University of Jammu is accredited as 'A' Grade University by National Assessment & Accreditation Council of India.

Location - University of Jammu is located in Jammu Tawi.
Facilities
Hostels – The University has 5 hostels, 3 for boys and 2 for girls. Majority of the rooms are double seated. Each hostel has telephone facility, sports facility, drinking water fitted with acquaguard, refrigerators, water coolers, television, modern cooking gas plant, geysers, mess, inverter facility, reading rooms well furnished guest room and first aid. Each hostel has a very big lush green sprawling lawn in front and backyard of the hostel. The University also provides residential facilities for teaching and the non-teaching employees on the campus.
Central Library - The Library has a collection of nearly 3.5 lakh volume and 250 current periodicals with back numbers. The Library possesses facilities like LCD projectors, INFLIBNET, CD-ROM databases and inter-connected computer terminals at selected sites. The Library is linked to and supported by Departmental Libraries, Evening Study Centre and Directorate of Distance Education Library. It has Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), an automatic identification method. It can accommodate about 500 readers at a time. The Central Library was renamed as Dhanvantri Library, to give recognition to the work of Dhanvantri (1902-1953), in the freedom movement, socialist cause in India, apart from J & K land reforms
DDE University of Jammu - Directorate of Distance Education offers various professional and non-professional courses at under-graduate and post-graduate levels including Master of Education, Bachelor of Education, Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration and Postgraduate course in Fisheries which is a job-oriented course, the first of its kind through distance mode of education in the country. It is located in the 118.78 acres of land in Main New Campus of the University, near the Law School and famous Gen. Zorawar Singh Audotorium Complex. The DDE has study centres one each in Muffasil Govt Degree Colleges - Kathua, Poonch, Rajouri, Bhaderwah, Kishtwar and Doda. These centres have facilitated higher education to the doorsteps of those residing in remote rural, backward and inaccessible hilly areas of the Jammu region. University Centres
Adult, Continuing Education & Extension - Teaching of Various Courses is done for post graduate students on components of Population and Extension. Continuing Education Unit of the Centre arranges for diploma courses in office management, advance computer course, basic and advance course in French Language, certificate courses in functional Urdu, English and courses for crafts and designs, on self supporting basis. Extension and outreach activities in villages are organised through programmes for promoting social responsibility and capacity building among people besides undertaking community work for self improvement of adults.
Computer Centre – It provides various computing facilities along with various vocational courses for the students community/other staff of the Universities/Institutes.
Centre for New Literatures – It offers short and long term courses on Canadian, African, Australian and Caribbean Literature from time to time.
Dr. Ambedkar Studies Centre – It was sponsored by the University Grant Commission (UGC) under its Epoch-making Social Thinkers Scheme which works to strengthens the voices of downtrodden sections of Jammu and Kashmir. The objectives of the Centre are to acquaint teachers and students with the thoughts, actions and works of Dr. B. R Ambedkar and pursue studies, research and field work based extension programmes.
Gandhian Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies – Also known as Gandhian Centre, it organises 25 to 30 programmes every year for dissemination of information relating to Gandhi, non-violence, conflict resolution, peace studies and other related areas.
IHG - Institute of Himalayan Glaciology is involved in glacier studies of the Himalayas. These mountains are storehouse of 3136 glaciers that makes 60% of the total glaciers in Indian Himalayas and covers 13% of land area of the State. These can be utilised for the growth of state's economy and future development.
International Centre for Cross-Cultural Research and Human Resource Management – It promotes education, research, training and consultancy in the area of Cross - Cultural Management, International Management International Human Resource Management.
Centre for history & culture of Jammu and Ladakh Regions - It is involved in conducting research pertaining to history and culture of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh regions since its inception.
Population Education Resource Centre - The unit caters to 6 Universities and 410 Colleges. It conducts Advocacy Programmes, Orientation and Training on Quality of Life components. The Centre also arranges for women empowerment programmes directly and in collaboration with various agencies. The Unit also offers Telephone Counselling on HIV/AIDS, Drug Addiction and Health.
University Health Centre - The Medical aid facilities are provided to the students, both boarders and day scholars, employees and their dependants of the University under the supervision of Chief Medical Officer and Doctor. Facilities like clinical laboratory and E.C.G. and Ambulance service, are also available.
USIC - University Science Instrumentation Centre nurtures and spreads the culture of instrumentation in the higher education system. Its technological infrastructure includes five main workshops viz. 1. Electronics and analytical 2. Mechanical 3. Refrigeration 4. Electrical and 5. Glass blowing. USIC is also providing support facilities to institutions other than University, like Govt. Colleges, J&K Forensic Laboratory etc.
Yoga Centre - Yoga Centre offers various courses to a large number of persons including University teachers, students, scholars, citizens and professionals.
Other University Centres
Minority Coaching Unit - This unit caters to the special needs of the minority students preparing for various Competitive Examinations i.e. K.A.S., Probationary Officers, Medical Entrance, Engineering Entrance, JRF/NET and various other professional courses.
Computing Services - The computing resources at the University are provided for use by staff and students in support of teaching, learning, research, computing facilities each department of the university has its own computing resources. Besides central computing facilities each department of the university has its own computing resources.
Internet Facility - The Centre provides Internet facility 24*7 to all the users in the University including teaching, administrative staff, hostels as well as the students.
Wi-Fi Facility – The Wi-Fi Campus Network covers entire campus which includes all buildings and outer surroundings Data transfer rate up to 54 mbps.
Employment Information-Cum-Advisory Bureau - The bureau offers guidance and counselling for career selection and placement services to a large number of students and brings out a monthly Newsletter. It arranges for career talks and provides aptitude testing, guidance and placement services.
University Scholarships & Fellowships – The University provide various Fellowships and Scholarships to deserving students.
Some of these are:
International Students Courses – Foreign students can download application form for eligibility / admission of the University. After filling up the form it can be e-mailed directly to the Association of Indian Universities (www.aiuweb.org) for determining the eligibility for the said course.
Academic Staff College - The U.G.C. supported Academic Staff College is a purely tenure based temporary scheme. At any moment of time the Scheme may be closed or opened as per the need of running the Orientation Programme and Refresher Course.
Video Conferencing - Video Conferencing Facility Suite is in the Brainstorm Room located at vice – Chancellors chamber. The suite offers the ability to hold conferences with many other sites throughout India. The suite comfortably seats 10-15 people at a conference table, with seating available for an additional 7-8 participant on and/or off camera.
Canteen - There are two main cafeterias besides many of the corner canteens and eating points. One cafeteria is near to the Science and Law blocks. Second cafeteria is housed in General Zorawar Singh Auditorium.
Seminar and Conference Halls - The University of Jammu regularly holds various National & International level conferences and seminars on various themes and disciplines. The seminar hall in the Vice-Chancellor's secretariat is often used for holding interaction among a group of 50-70 people. Besides it, JU also holds conferences and seminars through video conferencing.
Auditorium - General Zorawar Singh Auditorium has a seating capacity of more than 1500. The auditorium can be divided into two parts: the main auditorium with a capacity of more than 1000, and a mini auditorium - with its own hydraulic stage, acoustic, sliding-folding partition - with a seating capacity of about 500. It is used for hosting national seminars and conferences.
Sports - University provides various sports facilities like - tennis court, play ground, volley ball court, foot ball play ground, gymnasium etc.
NSS - National Service Scheme organises special camps, inter-college & National Integration camps to make youth interact with each other and transfer skill.
Guest House - University Guest House has 18 rooms in its building. It is situated just opposite the Law department with the state of the art 5 VVIP air conditioned rooms with various other facilities.
