S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences (SNBNCBS) is a premier research institution which is involved in advanced scientific research in frontier areas. It is funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. The Institute offers Ph.D. Programs in a number of areas. It was established in 1986 named after scientist Satyendra Nath Bose.
University Units
Advanced Material Research Unit - It is a specialized unit set up for facilitating interdisciplinary research in advanced materials. It is involved in promoting computation-based research, so as to have a complete and fundamental understanding of advanced materials. The unit will also network with different computational groups outside S.N. Bose Centre, both nationally and internationally. It will contribute to manpower training in terms of organizing workshops and summer schools and having visitors from universities and other research institutes within India.

Facilities
Hostel - Residence in the hostel within the SNBNCBS campus is mandatory (barring special cases) to enable concentrated study and interaction. Until SNBNCBS becomes fully equipped to house all students on campus, if and when necessary, some students may be accommodated in off-campus rented apartments in Salt Lake area. Transports are provided for bringing students from off campus housing to the Centre.
SNB Library - The Library collection comprises of more than 10,000 documents mainly in the fields of Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Electronics, Laser, Chemistry, Biology, Material Science, Nano Science, Technology etc. The library subscribes to 25 popular magazines and receives a good number of periodicals in exchange and also subscribes 13 newspapers are purchased towards this end. The institutional membership at the Library and Information Services, British Council also enhances this service. The library is fully computerized with the installation of LIBSYS 4 (on Linux platform). A server and 20 PCs, multimedia, scanners, colour printer, lamination machine, CD - writers, are also part of the set-up. The electronic databases at the Library cover monographs, journals, annual reports, CD/DVD-ROMs. The library subscribes to 234 journals. Most of the journals have online access.
CC - Computer Centre is responsible for the computational facilities of the Centre. There are around 35 Desktops running Fedora for the use of member of the Centre. It remains open 24x7. The computer centre also looks after the computer backbone of the centre which includes the mail servers, web servers. The centre has a 256-processor based unix cluster.
Research Work - It is carried out over a broad spectrum of multidisciplinary studies as well as some pure areas ranging from Nano Sciences, Material Sciences, Condensed Matter Sciences to High Energy Physics etc. The TPSC (Theoretical Physics Seminar Circuit) was set up by the DST, Govt. of India, to promote collaboration and sharing of research ideas and results between different research centres in India. The S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences is the nodal centre.
