About University of North Bengal

University of North Bengal, also referred as North Bengal University was established by Act of the Legislature of West Bengal in 1962. It was assigned the mandate of providing teaching, training and research in various branches of advanced learning and promoting the dissemination of knowledge to fulfil growing socio-economic and technical manpower needs in the six North Bengal districts and the neighbouring state of Sikkim. The campus occupies an area of about 330 acres 9 km outside Siliguri and Bagdogra Airport in the Terai region of Darjeeling district. The University Act was revised under West Bengal Act of XXV of 1981 and it came into force with effect from September 16, 1981. The University has 25 Postgraduate Departments, 24 Centres for Study, Research and Consultancy and 55 affiliated colleges offering courses in almost all subjects across the three districts of North Bengal. Three districts - Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling district are affiliated to this university. The University also gets students and scholars from adjoining areas in Bihar and the North Eastern states, as also from SAARC countries like Bhutan, Bangladesh and Nepal.

Facilities

Hostels - The university has 9 Hostels with all the basic facilities. Of these, 4 are for Boys and 5 are for Girls.

Residential Quarters - The University provides residential facilities for its Faculty and other staff.

Central Library - The Library has 1,95,187 number of books, 4453 (e-subscription) and 755 (Print Subscription) Journals & Periodicals.

Directorate/Centre for Distance Education - The Centre provides various under graduate and post graduate courses like B.A., M.A. etc. The Distance Education Council of India has extended recognition to the Directorate of Distance education of the university of north Bengal for the sessions 2010-2011, 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 vide its Letter no. Off-Campus Distance Education
- This mode of education is provided in partnership with Zee Interactive Learning Systems which is a wing of Zee Network Education Group. Classes in Zed Career Academy are conducted at selected Study Centres (ZedCA) throughout West Bengal.

Medical Facility - Free Medical treatment and pathological facility with nominal charges is available for both students and the staff.

Self-financed Courses
- The University also provides certain Self-financed Courses both at undergraduate and post graduate level. Some of these are - M.B.A. – two years, M.Sc. in Microbiology, Postgraduate Diploma in Tea Management (one year duration) etc.

Coaching Centres - These are available for P.G.Students (UGC assisted in Xth Plan period).

Guest House - Accomodation is available on request on payment basis as per NBU rules.

Museum - The Akshaya Kumar Maitreya Heritage Museum incorporating Raja Rajaram Museum Collection was established in the University of North Bengal in February 1965. It has a rich repository of collection in sculpture, coins, paintings, manuscripts etc. depicting the history and Heritage of North Bengal.

NSS - National Service Scheme units undertake both Regular Activities and Special Camping every. As per NSS manual, a volunteer has to render 120 hours of service to the society as a member of the NSS unit per year. The volunteers who take part in the special camping programme has to work for 7 consecutive days at the venue of the programme.

NBUAA - North Bengal University Alumni Association acts a bridge between the past and present students. It is also mutually beneficial and developing enduring relationship between the University's past with its future.

  • The University is re-accredited by NAAC as B++.
