Aliah University (AU) is an autonomous university under the Department of Minority Affairs and Madrasah Education, Government of West Bengal. It is a minority educational institution as per Aliah University Act 2007, Section 3 (3). Aliah University was setup as a Madrasah named Mohammedan College of Calcutta in 1780. In fact, it was the first educational institution set up in India by Warren Hestings, the then Governor General of India. Popularly known as Madrasah-i-Aliah or Calcutta Madrasah it was then established to promote the study of Arabic and Persian languages and Islamic law with the aim of producing competent officers for the courts of justice. In 2007, the Madrasah was upgraded to Calcutta Madrasah College and then to Aliah University by the Government of West Bengal through Aliah University Act XXVII of 2007 passed in West Bengal Legislative Assembly. The University has been established for the advancement of higher education for socially and educationally backward classes belonging to the Minorities.
Aliah University has been allotted 12 acres of land for a new campus at New Town, Rajarhat by the West Bengal Government. Chief minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee of laid the foundation stone of 'Aliah University Campus' at Rajarhat on 15th December 2011.

Hostel Facilities - To accommodate the students or hostel for students of Madrasah-i-Aliah, Elliot Hostel was erected in the year 1896. This three-storied building was constructed out of the donations raised from the generous people and dedicated to Nawab Abdul Latif Bahadur in recognition of his services in promoting education among the Muslims of Eastern India. The hostel is located 17, Haji Md. Mohsin Square, Kolkata-700016. Sixty percent of its berths are reserved for the accommodation of Aliah University students studying in Islamic Theology and Mumtazul Muhaddethin (M. M.). Students are admitted in the hostel strictly on merit basis and on production of documentary evidence of their permanent residence.
Aliah University has a separate ladies hostel located in Sector-V, Salt Lake with an accommodation capacity of 50 students for the girls studying in Sector-I and Sector-V campuses.
Library Facilities - Aliah University has a library rich in collection of literature in Islamic Theology, Islamic Jurisprudence & Law, and Arabic. The library is now diversifying in the areas of Science, Engineering, Management Science, Humanities and Social Sciences.
Students’ Activities - The students of Aliah University are involved in extra-curricular activities, and students have their own web portal. Aliah University also organizes an annual fest, presently named Aliah Utsav, at the beginning of the even semester.
Reservation of Seats - Physically Disadvantaged Person (PD), For PD candidates, who are otherwise fit to pursue the course, and qualify in AUAT with relaxed norms relevant to this category, 3% seats are reserved as specified by the Government of India. For any category of disability (viz., locomotors, visual, speech, and /or hearing), benefit would be given to those candidates who have at least 40% permanent physical impairment in relation to a body part/system/extremity/extremities/whole body etc. The candidates in this category will be required to be certified by a Medical Board. The Medical Board will decide the following:-
The Medical Board duly constituted for this purpose shall meet at the time of counseling. Candidates, who are not certified by the Medical Board as belonging to the PD category, will not be counseled under this category. The decision of the Medical Board shall be final.
All India Competition - Sk. ChandanAli, a Post Graduate student in the Department of English, has won accolades in an all India competition celebrating National Youth Day. The event was organized by Presidency College Kolkata in collaboration with the International Youth Hostel Society on 9 January 2010 at Derozio Hall of Presidency College.
Participation in Extempore Competition - Chandan participated in the extempore competition and spoke at length on “Politics of Tomorrow and the Youth”. As a mark of appreciation he was given a medal and a citation which has made the university proud.
Students’ Project Exhibition - Two of our students from the 5-year Integrated M.Sc. in Chemistry, Hajera Sultana and Shamim Akhtar, were selected and invited to exhibit their project entitled 'Current Production from Wind' at Innovation Hub (INFOCOM) 2010 held at Salt lake Stadium from 20 to 23 January 2010. They have just completed their first semester examination.
