The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIMC) was established as the first national institute for Post-Graduate studies and Research in Management by the Government of India in November 1961 in collaboration with Alfred P. Sloan School of Management (MIT), the Government of West Bengal, The Ford Foundation and Indian industry. IIM Calcutta is also the first Indian Institute of Management. Its first Director was K T Chandy, the former Chairman of Hindustan Lever. The foundation stone of the Joka campus was laid by Sri Morarji Desai, the then Dy. Prime Minister of India on Dec 15, 1968. The Institute moved to its present campus in 1975. The institute is located in its own 135 acres (0.5 km2) campus in Joka, away from the metropolis. IIM Calcutta has one of the most breathtakingly beautiful academic campuses in the country - spotted with scenic locales, five lakes, exotic birds, and a miniature Howrah Bridge.The institute is an autonomous body. The Institute offers five major teaching programs namely Post Graduate Program in Management (PGDM), Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Aided Management (PGDCM), Post Graduate Program for Executives (PGPEX), Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDBM) and Fellow Program in Management (FPM). The PGDM Program is designed to meet the challenges of rapid changes in our society. Students are continually exposed to scenarios that demand structuring of unstructured problems and proposing solutions to complex situations. In 1994, the two-year full-time PGDCM was started, which fulfils the demand for global business managers, by reorienting management education to keep pace with the changing needs of the world. It is a distinctive program with special emphasis on Information Technology (IT) and its application to business. This three year PGDBM is an evening program, also launched in 1994, to offer working executives the opportunity to gain insights into various facets of management. The FPM offers an opportunity for full-time advanced study and research at doctoral level in management and related areas. IIMC has about 70 faculty members belonging to one or more of the groups and centres of the institute. The campus of the Institute has a cluster of Administrative and Faculty Office Blocks, fully equipped classrooms, seminar and conference rooms, Management Centre for Human Values, residential quarters for students, faculty and staff members, library, an executive training complex, a bank and a post office. Library - It is named as B. C. Roy Memorial Library in the memory of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, the first Chairman of the Institute. The Library has a collection of more than 1.6 lakhs volumes of books and bound journals. It subscribes to 500 journals and provides access to more than 40,000 online full text journals. It is considered as one of the best management libraries in Asia. The functions and services of the library are computerized. Hostels - The campus has four hostels that provide single room accommodation to students with modern amenities and recreation facilities. All the hostels have their own coffee shops,canteens, photocopy units and printer rooms. Every room has its own network connection, which enables fast and round-the-clock Internet access. For the visitors, the institute provides guest-rooms. To take care of the married students’ needs, the institute has provided separate accommodation facilities for them. Intercom telephones are available in each hostel room with direct inward dialling facilities. Other facilities include state-of-the-art washing machines in every hostel wing for the convenience of students supplemented by dhobis. A Cafe Coffee Day outlet is also operational on campus.
Computer Centre - IIMC is an acknowledged leader in computing resource and applications. The Institute's computer Centre has emerged as a centre of excellence in the area of Computer Applications in Management. The campus wide LAN encompasses 1000 nodes/workstations. LAN connectivity is available in each room in the students' hostels, providing the students with 24-hour access to resources like the local network and the Internet from the comfort of their rooms.
Campus Wide LAN - IIM Calcutta enjoys an optical Gigabit Ethernet Campus Backbone. Internet Bandwidth is provided via a 2mbps link. The campus is wired on a 100mbps and 1-Gigabit Ethernet Backbone. This is a pure switched network which has been configured using Layer II and Layer III switches. All rooms on campus are wired onto the Internet. The network is a redundant system, which takes care of fault tolerance. 1100 rooms and all offices on campus are connected to this backbone. The network is the main element in IIM Calcutta's policy of providing "computing in every room". It also provides access to network resources like printers and scanners.
STEP - It is the international Student Exchange Program of IIM Calcutta. It encompasses PGP students ( that is, those who are following the post- graduate program in management), as well as doctoral students of IIMC. Under STEP, the students of IIM Calcutta get an opportunity to spend one term in major business schools around the world. The exchange program also enables overseas students from prestigious partner business schools to experience share ideas, insights and experiences with the IIMC community and gain a feel of Indian business as the country’s star rises rapidly on the world stage. Tata Hall - The Tata Hall provides accommodation to executives coming for Management Development Programmes. It consists of 56 residential rooms, four suites and three conference rooms. There is a plush dining hall, which caters to the occupants of Tata Hall. The suites present are double rooms while the other rooms provide single accommodation. Amenities like Phone, Fax, TV and Internet access are available here.
Management Centre for Human Values - The Management Centre for Human Values is the crystallization of two decades of aspirations and effort to bring to the members of human organizations and institutions - in India and abroad - contemporary adaptations of the perennial corpus of Indian psycho-philosophical wisdom. It has taken up the mission of integrating the soft and subtle dimension of human values with the mainstream of skill-dominated management education. The centre is located in a serene part of the campus and is surrounded by beautiful gardens.Its striking conical buildings are architectural masterpieces on the outside and quite sanctums of learning and contemplation on the inside.
Scholarships - A number of Scholarships are given, some of these are - Bharati Scholarship, Nestle Scholarship for Young Business Managers, GE Scholarship, Institute MCM Scholarship and Aditya Birla Scholarship.
Research @ IIMC - There are a number of components of the research at IIMC. First, there is a Working Paper series, which enables both faculty and Fellowship students to publish initial drafts of their findings and circulate these for comments and feedback. Secondly, IIMC publishes the journal Decision twice a year.
Co-Operative society - The institute has a co-operative society that caters to the needs of the IIMC community – both the student body as well as the faculty.
Bank and Post Office - The State Bank of India has a branch inside the campus and in addition to the normal banking services, it also provides loan facilities to the needy students.Both the SBI and ICICI have ATM's on campus.A post office is also located within the campus to save the students the hassle of going out for their postal needs.
Medical Facilities - The Institute’s medical consultant is available for consultation between the specified hours on all working days. For emergency, the services of two qualified pharmacists are also available on the campus.
Auditorium - IIM Calcutta's auditorium is the best among those on any academic campus in the country. This world-class facility seats 750 and was built at a cost of over Rs 9 crores. In addition to air-conditioning, it is also equipped with a ultra modern , professional level light and sound system. The Audi, as we call it, hosts all the major events on the IIM C campus - from the Convocation and Intaglio to visits by eminent personalities like Kapil Dev or Indra Nooyi.
Placement - The Institute's Placement Bureau arranges on-campus interviews for all students at the end of their second year. IIMC is also responsible for assigning students to summer projects at the end of the first year, where the students learn the practicalities in the industry by applying the theoretical concepts learnt in class. Last year, IIMC recorded the highest placements amongst all the IIMs. IIM Calcutta has proved to be India’s campus of choice for recruiters from around the world. A large number of international offers were made to the students, with locations all over the globe. Hong Kong, London, Singapore and New York are locations that feature prominently, offering jobs in banking and consulting firms.
Extra curricular activities - IIMC has a vibrant student community. Seminars, business school meets, sports and cultural events are regular features of the campus life. Student initiative is encouraged and a large number of clubs and societies are run by students.

The Great Lakes - There are seven lakes on the campus. One always sees at least one lake irrespective of where he/she is in the campus. Provides the twin advantage of cooling the air and fishing. The institute practises pisciculture in the lakes and there is a large catch of fish that goes out every week. There is a small jetty on the biggest lake overlooking the library and the tree-lined road leading to the auditorium.
