Netaji Subhas Open University (NSOU) is a popular Open University in eastern India. It was Established by W.B. Act (XIX) of 1997 and Recognised by U.G.C. under section – 2(f)of the UGC Act. It was chief Minister of West Bengal who announced the setting up of an Open University in West Bengal. Year 1997, was Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's birth centenary year. In his memory, the Higher Education Minister further spearheaded the idea after his visit to the Open University in U.K. Thus on 20th August 1997, the above mentioned act was passed. However, it started functioning with effect from July 1998 Semester. Today, its is the premier State Open University in India. It receives financial assistance from the State Government towards its maintenance and developmental activities. Netaji Subhas Open University Courses include several vocational, professional & Online courses in addition to its existing courses which are of M.Phil. & Ph.D. levels. Degrees/Diplomas/Certificates offered by NSOU are recognised by all the members of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) vide Circular No. EV/II(449)/94/176915-177115 dtd. January 14, 1994 and at par with the Degrees/Diplomas/Certificates of all Indian Universities/Deemed to be Universities vide Circular No. F.1-25/03(CPP-II) dated July 28, 1993 and F.1-52/2000(CPP-II) dated May 05, 2004. It is also recognized by the Distance Education Council, Govt. of India, the regulatory apex body of ODL in India, from which the University receives grants for its different developmental activities. It is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), Association of Asian Open Universities (AAOU) and Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU). The University has about 191 Study Centres which are expanding in numbers with the passage of time. With more than 1,00,000 learners in more than 80 courses, it is also referred as Mega University. The medium of instruction is available in 2 languages i.e. English and Bengali.

Study Material - Netaji Subhas Open University Kolkata, provides Study Materials which are in the Self-Learning or Self-Instructional Format (SLM & SIM). The University provides various Student Support Services (SSS) through a Network of Study Centres. These centres cover all the districts of the State & are located at convenient points connected by Public Transport. A Study Centre is placed under the supervision of a coordinator assisted by the staff of his office. It provides all information regarding admission procedures, courses of study and basic information about University. At the beginning of each session, the Study Centres invite the students for an induction meeting where they are familiarized with the aims, objectives & activities of the university & the methodology of Distance Education.The Study Centres draw schedules of counselling session and notify the same for the students. Normally, the counselling sessions are held during weekends and periods of vacation of the host institutions. The study centres also arrange holding of examination in accordance with the schedules fixed by the University from time to time. In short, each study centre acts as the day-to-day link between the students and the University.
Centre for Language Studies - It is University's own Study Centre.
It provides the below mentioned courses:
1. English For Communication (CEC).
2. DELT - Diploma in English Language Teaching.
3. M. A. in English Language Teaching.
The Centre for Language Studies is the only centre for conducting admission for courses 1 & 2. Classes and Personal Contact Programmes (PCPs) for all the three courses are held here. Admission for Course 3 is conducted at other notified Study Centres.

Gyan Vani - Gyan Vani Kolkata is an FM Channel dedicated to education, set up by Netaji Subhas Open University. It was born of a Memorandum of Understanding signed between IGNOU and NSOU. Gyan Vani is available at 105.4 MHz. Presently, the programme is being broadcast for 16 hours a day- 6 hours in the morning from 6 am to 12 noon and 10 hours in the evening from 1 pm to 11 pm. The channel seeks to bring about educational and social development of the community through radio.
Library - It has well stocked library with study resources for all subjects.
