The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences is a National University of Law and is counted amongst the esteemed Universities in West Bengal. It was established under the WBNUJS Act, 1999 (West Bengal Act IX of 1999) adopted by the West Bengal Legislature in July, 1999.The University was notified under Clause (f) of Section 2 of the UGC Act, 1956 in August 2004 and has been granted permanent affiliation by the Bar Council of India in July 2005. The Chief Justice of India is the Chancellor of NUJS and is also the Chairman of the General Council, the supreme policy-making body of the University. West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences is also known by it's short names, i.e. WBNUJS or just NUJS. NUJS offers an undergraduate B.A. or B.Sc. degree with an LL.B. For Masters students, NUJS offers an LL.M. and an M.Phil. Doctoral students can opt for Ph.D.s and LL.D.s. The faculty members of NUJS have educational qualifications from leading international and national universities including Columbia University, Oxford University and other leading universities of the world. It's campus is spread over an area of 5 acres of land comprising of an academic block, the halls of residence and a few flats for the faculties.

Constituent Institutes - NUJS has organized itself into a number of Schools and Centres of study, each independent in conception and operation, yet integrated through programmes of teaching, research and extension activities.

• SPLCJ - School of Private Laws & Comparative Jurisprudence.
• SPLG - School of Public Law & Governance.
• SSS - School of Social Sciences.
• The School of Technology, Law & Development.

Location - NUJS campus is located in the Salt Lake city of Kolkata overlooking the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass. The campus is well connected to the railway stations in Kolkata, the Kolkata airport and other well known destinations in Kolkata such as Park Street and Victoria Memorial. Facilities

Halls of Residence - There are separate halls of residence for boys and girls. Both the halls of residence, put together, can accommodate up to 500 students. These have mess facilities managed by a mess committee comprising of students. The halls of residence also have a common dining area with a television and other sporting facilities.

Library - The Library has a collection of over 14000 titles and more than 5000 volumes of bound periodicals. It also has a good collection of electronic materials in CD-ROMs and legal databases providing online access via major legal platforms. The library holds institutional membership with the British Council and the American Information Resource Centre, enabling students to access for general purpose reading. Internet access is available in the library on 21 machines and the library is wi-fi enabled allowing students and Faculty to access the net and online databases such as Heinonline, Westlaw, Lexis Nexis, Manupatra and other databases.

Guest House and Gymnasium - The campus also has a guest house and a gymnasium for the students and the staff and faculties of NUJS.

Moot Competitions - The Moot Court Society of the University organises various National Moot Court Competitions at regular intervals.

NUJS Working Paper Series - NUJS has launched the ‘NUJS Working Paper’ series with the objective to bolster the culture of legal research in national law schools in India. This series is aimed at reflecting and showcasing the active and ongoing research in the university on diverse legal and social science topics. This research, published as a ‘working paper’, is not fully refined and fully polished/finished like a journal article or a book chapter. It represents preliminary findings and arguments of ongoing research work and hence the name ‘working paper’. It is intended to disseminate the preliminary findings and arguments of ongoing research for the purpose of exchanging ideas, getting feedback and catalysing debate

Auditorium - The university has built its own auditorium on campus, with all modern facilities.

Campus Recruitment / Placement - The Campus Recruitment Committee (CRC), a student run body, overlooks and co-ordinates the recruitment of the graduating batch of students of the NUJS. It is responsible for communication and coordination between students sitting for Recruitment and Prospective Recruiters/ Recruiters. The recruitment process organized the CRC is usually a two-step process. The First step involves Pre-Placement Talk. All interested organizations are encouraged to give a pre-placement talk (PPT) to interested students at the University. The PPT usually contains important information such as the profile of the organization, career prospects, terms and conditions of employment and compensation packages. The Second step of the recruitment is the actual recruitment process, which happens in the recruitment week. The final placement usually takes place on the University campus over a period of seven to ten days. Interested organizations who may or may not have made a PPT have to inform/register with the CRC and are allotted a specific date and time-slot within the days of the recruitment week. In this regard, interested organizations are requested to contact the CRC directly at the mailing address provided. Some of the past recruiters have been Allen & Overy, Ashurst, Baker and Mckenzie etc.

Alumni Association - Any person who has graduated from the University with a B.A./B.Sc. LLB (Hons.) degree or any other degree from the University and recognized by the appropriate government authority shall automatically qualify as a member. However, to be qualified as an active member an annual membership fee will have to be paid. NUJS alumni either practice, teach or study all over the world from New York to Singapore. Alumni plays a very important role in nurturing and developing academic institutions.

Legal Aid Society - The WBNUJS Legal Aid Cell is involved in spreading legal awareness among students and people at large. For this the university conducts public speaking, awareness camps, seminars, legal counselling, poster making and street plays.

Achievements

• Mint, a business newspaper launched by the Hindustan Times Media Limited in collaboration with the Wall Street Journal, has ranked NUJS as the third best law school in India after the National Law schools in Bangalore and Hyderabad.
• The Washington and Lee University School of Law ranking of law journals ( http://lawlib.wlu.edu/LJ ) ranks NUJS Law Review the highest in India. The ranking lists 17 journals from India and assigns them “combined scores” based on “Impact Factor” and “Total Cites”. The combined score for NUJS Law Review for the academic year 2008 is 100.
• NUJS has been ranked the second best law school in India after the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore.
• NUJS faculties have also published books with reputed publishers like the Oxford University Press, Lexis Nexis Butterworths, Eastern Book Company etc. and have also contributed papers in edited volumes published by reputed publishing houses. NUJS faculties also contribute to key national dailies like the Indian Express, The Hindu, The Statesman, Business Standard, Financial Express, The Hindu Business Line, The Pioneer etc.
• Many of the NUJS students have been awarded prestigious scholarships such as Rhodes, Felix and Chevening for higher studies in the United Kingdom and also in the United States and other leading universities.
• NUJS team comprising of Sneha Janakiraman, Valli Chandra, Shan Kohli, and Trisha Singhvi won the 2010 edition of ELSA Moot Court Competition held in Dominican Republic between 24th to 30th May 2010.
