National Institute of Technology, Patna is the 18th National Institute of Technology created by the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India. National Institute of Technology, Patna has been declared as an Institute of National Importance and has been granted a fully Autonomous Status by MHRD, Government of India. The Institute has also been declared as a Centre of Excellence of impart high level education training , research and development in science, engineering technology and humanities. It is imparting high quality education & values at UG (B.Tech.), PG (M.Tech.) & Ph.D. programmes through its experienced faculty well versed in their respective field of engineering an technology with well equipped laboratories. The origin of NIT Patna can be traced to 1886 with the establishment of Pleaders Survey Training School which was subsequently promoted of Bihar College of Engineering Patna in 1924, making it the is the 6th Oldest Engineering College of India. The graduate level curriculum was later elevated to the post graduate level in 1978. It was rechristened National Institute of Technology from Bihar College of Engineering Patna on 28. 01. 2004. Bihar College of Engineering was the first Institute to be directly upgraded to NIT status as result of Government of India's broad objective to have at least one NIT per state. It is soon to be given the status of Deemed University with powers to frame its own academic policy to conduct its own examinations and to award its own degrees.
Location - The Institute is situated on the south bank of holy river Ganges behind Gandhi Ghat. The Gandhi Ghat is associated with the immersion of ashes of father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi in the river Ganges. The Institute campus is 8 Km from the Patna junction railway station and 20 Km from the Jai Prakash Narayan International Airport, Patna . Facilities
Hostels - The Institute provides residential facilities to students through three boy's Hostels and one girl's Hostel. At present Institute provides 29.37% only Hostel facility for boys and girls both. Each Hostel provides a Central Mess facility and 24 hours uninterrupted water and electricity supply. There are separate zones for every department, separate section for SC/ST under the name of B.R. Ambedkar section and separate section for e-journals called the E-Resource Section.
Library - The Institute maintains a central Library which has over 50,000 books and about 1,100 internationally acclaimed e-journals and works for about 10 hrs per day. The Central Library has a separate e-resource section at the ground floor, a study section at the first floor and a separate section for computer related books at the second floor.
Computer Laboratory - Every Department has a fully operational Computer Laboratory of their own to sharpen their programming skills and to get hands-on experience with the use of the software's in their respective fields of concern. EDA LAB-Electronic Data Automation Laboratory is the Central Laboratory that is used for general information access and for carrying out various research work.
Laboratories - All the Academic Departments have their own well organized Laboratories with all desired equipments required in Laboratory procedures.
Internet Facility - The Institute is presently using a 4 MB leased line on optical fibre from RailTel to provide Internet connectivity throughout the campus. This includes Wi-Fi connectivity all over the campus and Internet connectivity to every department and to the Hostels.
Medical Facilities - The Institute has made arrangement for a permanent doctor who has a fixed chamber within the institute premises. He entertains students and employees for consultations on different health related problems for two hours every working day free of cost. The present health consultant has been an ex-HOD of the Department of Endocrinology and Diabetology, Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH). The Institute also maintains a full time ambulance that is used for transferring residents of the institute to PMCH which is situated at close proximity in case of any emergency.
Banking - The Institute has a fully functional extension branch of Allahabad Bank within the Institute premises which provides all the modern Banking facilities to students and the employees in the Campus.
ConnectNIT - It is the rapidly emerging hub of the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) where students, alumni and staff get a common platform to interact effectively.
Extra Curricular Activities - The Institute organises a vivid category of events through which the students of the Institute provide for themselves a rendezvous of thought, cognizance, feeling and frolic which guarantees not just their overall grooming but also enhances their sense of responsibility.

Security - The Institute has a Private security agency which provides 24 hour security cover all over the Campus which includes the Hostels and the staff quarters. State security personnels carry out regular patrolling outside the Campus during night time.
Placement & Training - It organizes and coordinates Campus Placement Program. By coordinating with various industries and research Institutes the students get themselves acclimatized to the various technological advancements taking place worldwide. With the first batch of NIT passing out this year, the Institute has witnessed an unprecedented fillip in not just the CTC but also the number of job offers per student. The passed track record that reflected the Institute's reputation as the favourite hub of public sector companies, now also draws a rising curve for the number of private sector companies recruiting students from the institute; the average CTC amounting to Rs. 3.56 lacks pa for the 2008 passing out batch. The Summer / Vocational Training is part of the curriculum. Placement and Training Cell, arranges the Summer Training of Final and Pre-Final year Engineering students of Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics & Communications Engineering and Mechanical Engineering during the summer vacation in the months of June and July every year for a period of six weeks in different reputed organizations all over India. The Industrial Projects and Visits to different Industrial Organizations are arranged from Second year onwards for all the Engineering and Architecture Students, mostly in the months of January and February, or immediately after the completion of their course curriculum.
Alumni - The Institute works closely with the Alumni Association to involve NIT Patna Alumni through various activities towards excellence at NIT Patna.
