Mahatma Gandhi University (M.G.U), Meghalaya is a Private University established through Meghalaya State legislative Act, 2010 (Meghalaya Act No.6 of 2011), published in the Gazette of Meghalaya vide No.LL (B).138/2010/41. The University is empowered to award degrees as specified by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 22 of the UGC Act 1956. It is recognized by University Grants Commission (UGC), Distance Education (DEC) and Tripartite Committee of UGC-AICTE-DEC. MGU Shillong is recognised by Bar Council of India (BCI). M.G.U. Shillong is a member of Association of Indian Universities (AIU). It is also recognized by UGC-Distance Education Bureau for offering Programmes in open and Distance Learning (ODL).

Features of Mahatma Gandhi University, Meghalaya

i)  Semester Based System - For information technology, management courses exams are conducted semester wise i.e. twice in a year. It includes written examination as well as practicals.

ii)  Yearly Based System - For engineering, professional, traditional and research courses exams are held annually i.e. once in a year. These examinations are conducted by the University at end of term. It includes written examination as well as practicals.

iii)  Continuous Assessment - MGU education pattern includes continuous assessment of student throughout their course duration. This helps the students in evaluating their performance before final examination as well increasing their knowledge about the subject. Assessment gives students an idea of examination pattern. Under this practice, a student has to prepare and submit assignments, projects, term papers, home works followed by tests, design problems or case studies. The components of these assessments vary with the nature of the programme.

Scholarships - The University offers scholarship schemes give a chance to talents that may remain hidden due to financial constraints. These are also the means to reward the bright, brilliant and the deserving students. The scholarships are offered both at Graduate as well as Post graduate level.

Some of these are:

a)  For BCA Students - Preference will be given to candidates whose family annual in income is less than Rs.2, 50,000 per annum belonging to any category (Gen/SC/ST/OBC etc.).

b)  For all Diploma/Graduate/ Post-Graduate Courses - Preference will be given to candidates whose family annual in income is less than Rs. 2, 50,000 per annum belonging to any category (Gen/SC/ST/OBC etc.).

Research - The Research, Development and Innovation Centre plays an important role in enhancing the Research Methodology and practices for useful technologically products. It also helps students to enhance their skills. For this purpose, there are well equipped laboratories and advanced technical facilities.
