National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur was established in 1986 as Regional Engineering College, as a joint and cooperative enterprise of the Govt. of India and Govt. of Himachal Pradesh. It is an Institute of National Importance. The Institute provide Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Doctorate Education in Engineering, Sciences & Humanities. The Central Government was upgraded the NIT Hamirpur to the category of National Institute of Technology and it was accorded the status of a Deemed University on 26th June, 2002. The academic year starts from early August and concludes in late May. The academic pedagogy follows the semester system and each academic year consists of an odd and an even semester, which are punctuated by a short winter vacation in late December and a longer summer vacation spanning June and July. Engineering undergraduates need to successfully complete eight semesters in order to be awarded Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech), while their counterparts in the field of architecture need to complete ten semesters to be awarded Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch). In 2005 Master of Technology (M.Tech) were introduced in different departments. Later, in 2006 Doctor of Philosophy and in 2009, MBA programs were introduced.
Location - The Campus is situated at Anu in Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh and is 4 Kms from main bus stand of Hamirpur on Hamirpur – Toni Devi road. Click here for Google Map Location.

Facilities
Hostel - As per the admission policy of Govt. of India, 50% of the students, are from the state of Himachal Pradesh, whereas the other 50% are from the other States. There are Six Hostels in this Institute. Five of it are for boys and girls have the separate one. Names of the Hostel are on the basis of famous mountain ranges of Himachal Pradesh .The Hostels are in perfect shape and provide all the basic facilities to the students. Each Hostel has got its own mess. Food available is delicious and the menu is decided by the students themselves. Each Hostel has solar heating system, own recreation hall with badminton court and table tennis tables. There is a separate gym for the boys and girls with the latest machines for their work out. Internet facility has been provided in every room of each host.
Library - The Library has got the seating capacity of 100 readers in reading halls and 50 readers in Audio-Visual Hall. Library follows the open access system. The Institute has a collection of 47621 Books. Apart from this it has a collection of 1814 Video Cassettes, 356 Reports, 382 CDROM, 1597 CD/Floppies of books etc. The Book Bank facilities is extended to all SC/ST students and economically backward students of General Category on income basis up to income of Rs. 1 lacs on producing the income certificate by competent authority i.e. Tehsiladar/SDM and if books left then by lottery system. At the maximum five books will be issued a student subject to availability of books. The books, which are not available in the Library, are procured from other Libraries on the request of members.
Scholarships - Students are given various scholarships by the Institute and Industries alike.
Laboratories - Various Departments of the Institute have their own separate Laboratories to put theory into practice.
Some of these are:
TEQIP - The Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme of Government of India ) aims to up-scale and support ongoing efforts of GOI to improve quality of technical education and enhance existing capabilities of the institutions to become dynamic, demand driven, quality conscious, efficient and forward looking, responsive to rapid economic and technological developments occurring both at National and International levels.
Centre for Material Science and Engineering - The main focus of the teaching and research in the department is centred on interdisciplinary area to achieve worldwide attention and appreciation.
Centre For Excellence in Energy & Environment - The major task of the Centre is to develop comprehensive innovative solutions to various energy and environmental challenges . This involves promoting energy efficiency and the adoption of renewable energy sources like Solar ,Wind, Geothermal, Hydro, Biomass etc.to meet energy requirements and to consider various renewable energy policies at the local, regional, and national levels.
Health Centre - It is equipped with basic medical facilities and in case of emergency, patients are referred to the Zonal Hospital, Hamirpur. Presently, the health centre is serving the strength of more than 1200 undergraduate and postgraduate students, faculty and staff members including their wards . The OPD timings are 9:0 AM. to 1:30 PM and 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM (Monday to Friday). If a student falls ill on or before the final examinations, one may get a medical certificate from the Medical Officer for this purpose. The medical facilities are available free of cost to the students. An ambulance is available round the clock to face any kind of emergency.
Sports - The Institute provides Sports facilities for both Indoor and Outdoor Games. Annual Sports Meet is a mega event of the Institute.
Training & Placement - The T & P Department arranges Placement interviews/written tests for various companies and helping students to get jobs in different organizations. The final selection is subject to fulfilling the terms and conditions mentioned in the offer letters issued by the companies. The Institute also offers getting a continuous feedback from the industry about the students recruited during the previous years through Campus Recruitment. Many companies of repute are showing their interest to visit Institute on the very first day of Campus recruitment schedule. The Institute has decided to start the concept of “Dream Job Option” for students once more than 80% students of a batch are placed. Students will be asked to give their choice for any one of the dream job companies interested to visit the Campus for 2nd round (i.e. one chance to appear in the company of their choice). Srijan - The annual magazine provides the NITH fraternity a podium to unleash their thoughts and take the ever beautiful form of literary writings. The students of NITH contributing to SRIJAN not only have the penchant for writing but also work day and night to make Srijan a cynosure every year. This leaves the readers believing that Reading is celebration.
SPEC - Society For Promotion of Electronics Culture organises events, workshops and educational tours for the students. It is a non profit society run by allotted funds, funds collected from members and sponsorships from private organisations. The society holds a prominent position among various societies present in college.
SPIC MACAY - This student chapter, as elsewhere, is managed by a group of student enthusiasts who are engaged in a constant endeavour to create further awareness and appreciation of our culture. With the doyens of classical music and dance lending their support to the movement, the SPIC MACAY student chapter NIT Hamirpur organizes a number of programs on campus as well as in the neighbouring schools and colleges.
ISTE - Indian Society for Technical education provide a variety of opportunities for students social and professional development.
Prayas - Team Literacy is involved in providing maximum possible support to those who struggle even for the basic amenities of life. It aims to impart them the quality education to enable them to stand firm in this competitive world. Here in and around NITH there are many children who are in need of education, but can't get it because of lack of resources. The team members of Literacy Mission are there to help them.
GLUG NITH - It is s a moniker for the GNU/Linux User Group of National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur. The GLUG is mainly designed to cater to the GNU/Linux related needs of the students, faculty, staff, and anybody else belonging to NIT Hamirpur.
National Cadet Corps - Each year two annual camps (generally at Shah Talai and Lathiyani) are arranged by the unit where numbers of activities are occurring .This aims toward the development of national integrity, physical and mental developments of Cadet and are also trained for the odd times like war, aid to civil authority.
Community Services Scheme - It is involved in various community services for children education, hygiene, etc.
