M.A. Urdu or Master of Arts in Urdu is a postgraduate Urdu language course. It covers the areas regarding Urdu literature: society, poetry, prose, drama, novels, grammar etc. The duration of M.A. in Urdu is mostly of two academic years but it may vary from institute to institute. During the course the main emphasis is given on the Urdu language and literature, its development through the phases of History and the syllabus is divided into four semesters. It provides lot career opportunities to the candidates in Urdu speaking business communities.

M.A. Urdu Eligibility

  • The candidates should complete their B.A. degree under any recognised University in Arts stream with Urdu as one of the subjects.
  • The marks of admission for this course may vary from University to University.

History of Urdu Language & Literature

I. Instructions for Paper setter and Examiner:

1. The course shall consist of four units. The examiner shall set a total of eight questions with two questions being set in each unit. Candidate shall answer one question from each unit. All questions carry equal marks.
2. Question to be asked and framed only from the prescribed courses of reading and syllabi.
3. The question will be based on Urdu Language and Literature.

1. Letters of Mirza Ghalib
2. Contribution of Sir Sayyad and Shibli Nomani.

Unit III

Delhi School of Urdu Poetry with Special reference to Mir taqi Mir, Mohd., Rafi Sauda, Mir Dard, Sheikh Ibrahim Zauq, Momin Khan Momin and Mirza Ghalib.

Unit IV

Lucknow School of Urdu Poetry with special reference to Haidar Ali Atish, Sheikh Ibrahim Nasir, Anis and Dabeer.

Elements of Urdu Structure

I. Instructions for Paper setter and Examiner:

1. The course shall consist of four units. The examiner shall set a total of eight questions with two questions being set in each unit. Candidate shall answer one question from each unit. All questions carry equal marks.
2. Question to be asked and framed only from the prescribed courses of reading and syllabi.

1. The course shall consist of four units. The examiner shall set a total of eight questions with two questions being set in each unit. Candidate shall answer one question from each unit. All questions carry equal marks.
2. Question to be asked on all the prescribed books and poets.
3. First questions related to explanation (One from Ghazal and one from Nazam) shall be compulsory.
4. Critical study of Poetic style of the poet
5. Life and literary contribution of the poet and its value.
