About Pandit Sundarlal Sharma (Open) University

Pandit Sundarlal Sharma (Open) University (PSSOU) Chhattisgarh, Bilaspur was established by the Chhattisgarh legislature in the 55th year of the republic of India. The Governor of the state accorded his assent to it on on 20th January, 2005 and the act was published in the Chhatisgarh Gazette (extra ordinary) no. 20 Raipur, Monday the 24th  January, 2005. Dr. T.D. Sharma joined this university as the first Vice-Chancellor on 2nd March, 2005 while Dr. Sharad Kumar Vajpai take office as Registrar on the 15th  March, 2005. The University is named after Pandit Sundarlal Sharma, a freedom fighter who stood for social justice, equality and non-violence. He was also a social reformer stood against social evils like casteism, untouchability and economic exploitation. PSSOU offers various academic programmes that lead to Certificates, Diplomas and Degrees. It develops and produces courses for delivery through open learning and distance education mode. PSSOU is also actively involved in research, training and extension education activities.

Facilities

Instructional System - The working of this university is different from that in the conventional universities.  The Open University system is more learner-oriented, and the student has to be an active participant in the teaching-learning process.  Most of the instructions are imparted through distance rather than face-to-face communication. The University follows a multi-channel approach for instruction.  

Multi-channel approach for instruction comprises a suitable mix of:

• Self-instructional printed material (in some course text book).

• Audio and video cassettes.

• Audio-video programmes transmitted through Radio and Doordarshan.

• Face-to-face counselling at Study Centers by academic counsellors.

• Assignments.

• Practicals.

• Gyan Darshan Channel (through DRS downlink channel in selected study centre).

• Gyan Vani. (effort under process).

• Web based academic support (in the process of development).

Evaluation System - The system of evaluation in PSSOU is different from that existing in conventional universities.

PSSOU has a 3-tier system of evaluation :

• Self-assessment exercise within each unit of study.
• Continuous evaluation mainly through assignments which are tutor-marked and/or computer-marked, practical assignments and project work.
• Term-end examinations.
