Surguja University Ambikapur or Sarguja Vishwavidyalaya (hindi term for university) is a state university. Surguja University, Ambikapur, Chhattisgarh has been established by Act (adhiniyam) No. 18 of 2008 by the state legislature of Chattisgarh. Surguja University Chhattisgarh, started functioning from 2^nd, September 2008. Formerly a university campus it was started with the permission of State Higher Education Department by the Guru Ghasidas University Bilaspur with 2 diploma courses i.e. Diploma in Pharmacy & Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Application in the year 2005. It was expected by the university authorities that it would be upgraded as a university by the Government as soon as necessary infrastructures were developed. And it did happen in 2008. Situated in tribally enriched, socially, economically challenged area of Chhattisgarh State, its objective is to educate the rural populace and develop the region. It is empowered to award degrees as specified by the UGC under section 22 of the UGC Act 1956. Its territorial jurisdiction comprises of entire Sarguja division comprising of revenue districts of Korea, Sarguja and Jaspur. At present the university is having 42 affiliated colleges offering various courses in the areas of arts, science, commerce, education, law, management, social & life science and so on. The state government has allotted 220 acres of land nearby Ambikapur, Ramanujganj Road just 10 k.m. away from Ambikapur town. As of 2012, the university is partially residential.
