M.Phil. Sociology or Master of Philosophy in Sociology is a postgraduate Sociology course. Sociology is the study of society. It is a social science a term with which it is sometimes synonymous which uses various methods of empirical investigation and critical analysis to develop and refine a body of knowledge about human social activity. For many sociologists, the goal is to apply findings directly to the pursuit of social welfare, while others seek purely academic or intellectual knowledge. M.Phil. (Sociology) is aimed at generating future researchers who would be equipped with an ability to develop a critical understanding of social realities. This Programme is a research degree and it would, therefore, be beneficial for individuals who wish to pursue a career in research, be it in academics or in the development sector or in industry. The Programme would also be useful in providing a platform for individuals who wish to pursue their Ph.D. degree in the future. By making the students undergo rigorous academic exercise it is the aim of the Department of Sociology to produce a group of students through the M.Phil.
