Himachal Pradesh Day is observed on 25th January to commemorate the establishment of a separate state. It was on 18th December 1970, that the State of Himachal Pradesh Act was passed by Parliament and the new state was granted its statehood on 25th  January. It became the 18th state of the Indian Republic. Before gaining the status of a separate state, it was a part of Punjab state including Haryana, Chandigarh and some parts of Delhi. Himachal Pradesh Day is also known by other names like - Himachal Pradesh Statehood Day and Himachal Diwas. The state is celebrating the 42nd Statehood Day on 25th January, 2012. On this day various functions and activities are held to felicitate the achievers in various field of activities. Government organised programmes are presided over by important dignitaries like the Chief Minister, Governor and others. State’s achievements are applauded and put forth before the people so that they also get inspired to do the same. Message of peace and prosperity for the people of the State and development of the country is also conveyed.
