Christmas Tree Lights are strands of Electric Lights used to decorate homes, public/commercial buildings and Christmas Trees during the Christmas season. They are also known as Italian Lights, Holiday Lights, Mini Lights and Twinkle Lights, Fairy Lights in different parts of the world. There is a huge variety of Christmas Lights - some are just small incandescent coloured bulbs,  some are Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs) some are Candle shaped, some are Star Shaped and so on. Christmas Lights have been used during festive Christmas which eventually became a tradition even amongst the non-Christian community.

History

Edward Hibberd Johnson (1846-1917), an American inventor who invented the first electrically illuminated Christmas Tree Lights. He was also a business associate of American inventor Thomas Alva Edison. He was involved in many of Edison's projects. He was Vice-President of the Edison Electric Light Company, when he invented Christmas Tree Bulbs which he had specially made for Edison. He hand-wired them with 80 red, white, and blue electric light bulbs the size of walnuts and displayed his Christmas Tree on December 22, 1882, at his home in New York City.

Development in the Invention of Christmas Tree Lights

In 1895, President Cleveland set up a Lighted Christmas Tree in the White House. It was a huge specimen, featuring more than a Hundred Multicoloured Lights. This caught the attention of the public and these became popular. But the common man could not afford it.

In 1903, The American Eveready Co. came out with the First Humane Christmas Light set, including screw-in bulbs and a plug for the wall socket.

In 1908, Ralph Morris came up with the idea of pulling the lights from an old telephone switchboard and wiring them on a tree, running them from a battery.

However it was Albert Sadacca, who popularised Christmas Tree Lighting. Albert’s family had come from Spain and they were running a novelty business selling wicker cages with imitation birds in them that lit up. A tragic fire in New York City in 1917, caused by the practice of lighting the trees with candles, inspired 15-year-old Albert Sadacca to make use bulbs instead of Candles. He thought that they had lots of bulbs in hand and it would be much safer to use them instead of candles. Albert suggested to his parents that they begin making electric lights for Christmas trees. The idea was good but only one hundred strings of electric Christmas Tree could be sold in the first year. Then Albert came up with the idea of painting the bulbs with red, green, and other colours instead of using plain glass. This proved to be pivotal point as his business picked up sharply. He and and his two brothers, Henri and Leon formed a multi-billion Company named NOMA Electric Company in 1965.

It wasn't long before that the strings of lights adorned mantles and doorways inside homes, and ran along the rafters, roof lines, and porch railings of homes and businesses. Christmas Light Sculptures were more elaborate form of Lightening inspired by Christmas Tree Lights. These are generally flat but also come in Three-Dimensional format. Most flat ones are bare frames while 3D ones include deer or reindeer. Some Sculptures have micro-controllers that sequence circuits  of Lights, so that the object appears to be in motion. This is used to depict snowflakes falling, Santa Claus waving, a peace dove flapping its wings, train wheels rolling etc.

Role of the invention of Christmas Tree Lights in the development of Human Life

  • It made Christmas more fun and more colourful.
  • It provided business to the Manufacturers of these Lights and provided employment to the people.
  • Improvement in the efficiency of these Lights saved money and energy as well.
