Patternmakers are professionals who create templates or models that are used to produce copies of products ranging from shoes and shirts to chairs and plastic containers and the like others. There are many types of pattern makers. The most familiar found working in the clothing industry, but others work in the furniture or home building industries such as those working with wood. Metal pattern makers can be found in the car industry or another machinery-related field.

Educational Qualification
The minimum educational qualification for becoming a Patternmaker is Bachelor’s Degree in Designing or similar to it.

 

Patternmaker Required Skills

  • Patternmakers must be comfortable working with geometric concepts and be able to visualize how shapes fit together in three dimensions in order to complete a pattern.
  • As with technological advances on the rise, having experience with computers and machinery skills is important as well.
  • They should be able to interpret a design concept and put it to paper.
  • They have also excellent sewing skills and are very detailed oriented.
  • A pattern maker should be able to draw free-hand and also be familiar with computer software programs like Illustrator.

 

How to become Patternmaker?

One has to follow below-given steps for becoming a Patternmaker-

Step 1
Students after completing their 12th class, they have to go for a Bachelor’s Degree in the Designing or its related subjects like Anatomy, Sewing and Tailoring, Maths, Drafting and Apparel Construction. There are many institutes offering courses in these subjects. There is also an entrance test in some of the reputed institutes for admission.

Bachelor’s Degree Courses:

  • B.A. (Fashion Designing)
  • B.Sc. (Dress Designing)
  • B.Sc. (Animation Game Designing and Development)

Step 2
There are some research positions given on the basis of the Master’s Degree. Therefore, after passing their graduation they can go for further degrees.

Patternmakers begin their tasks by studying blueprints, instructions and other production information as it describes what patterns are needed. From these examinations, they develop measurements based on the size of the product. They then write or scribe specifications and identification marks directly on materials. They set up automated and manual tools, operate them to make patterns, and if necessary, assemble pattern sections. They might also adjust and repair any discrepancies and clean the final product before using it for production. Most patternmakers design their work by themselves, although some interact with designers and production staff.

There are many career prospects for them after its completion. Employers of Pattern Makers range from small boutique designers to large apparel manufacturers. Some of them are self-employed, contracting their services out to a range of clients. They can also have jobs in the fashion industry both in India and outside.

Salaries vary widely among patternmakers depending on their experience and qualifications. They may have to work for lower wages for a while as you glean the years of experience many high-paying positions require. They can earn an initial monthly salary ranging from Rs.15,000 to Rs.25, 000. It increases as the experience increases.
