The Nagaland University was established by the Nagaland University Act, 1989 of the Parliament on 6th Sept. 1994. The Nagaland University inherited from the North Eastern Hill University 5 Post Graduate departments at Kohima and 12 departments of B.Sc.(Agri) including 4 Post Graduate departments at School of Agricultural Sciences & Rural Development (SASARD), at Medziphema. It is the only Central University in the State having three campuses, viz., Lumami Headquarters, Kohima and Medziphema. Nagaland University has 25 departments in its various campuses. The Medziphema Campus has 250 acres of land and the Lumami Campus has 801.96 acres of land. At present the University is functioning from its Kohima Campus as Interim Headquarters. Each Campus has its own administrative and academic unit to manage the day to day educational affairs. The University has started 4 centres on Tribal Studies, Bio-diversity, Mass Communication (IIMC-NU) and Gandhian Peace Studies. At present the University has about 50 research Projects, which are under progress. The University has been publishing Research Journal, Newsletter and Students’ Magazine. It has published 4 books this year including two text books for the Undergraduate students published by Macmillan Publishers. Nagaland University is an affiliating University. There are 48 colleges affiliated to this University from various parts of the State. The University has also been identified as an affiliating University for Minority Educational Institution at all India basis. Recently, the University has organized national seminars on Geology and Energy Resources of North East India, Higher Education, Human values, Vice-Chancellor’s Meeting of North-East and J&K regions and vision 2020 for Nagaland. Nagaland University has also initiated Centre on Women’s Studies. It has been sanctioned an Institute of Engineering and Institute of Management by the Ministry of Human Resource Development and University Grants Commission. The University has been sanctioned one Special Assistance Programme (SAP) to the Botany Department by the UGC and 3 FIST Programmes by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. It has been granted Botanical Garden and Fishery Training facilities by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and Department of Biotechnology (DBT), by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, New Delhi respectively. The Ministry of Social Justice has sanctioned two hostels for boys & girls of SC & ST categories at Lumami Headquarters.
Location - The University is located in the tribal dominated State of Nagaland having borders with Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur and Myanmar (Burma on its long eastern stretch).

Facilities
Hostel - Hostel facilities for Boys and Girls exist in all the campuses.
Central Library, Kohima Campus - It has 32,916 volumes of books, back volumes of Journals etc. Currently the library subscribes to 75 International and National Journals, covering all the seven Depts. located at the Kohima Campus. The Library has started providing Internet Access facility to scholars, faculty, students etc. on all working days.
SASRD Library - It has now a collection of nearly 25,000 volumes including books, bound journals, thesis and other reading materials. The Library also receives newsletters, bulletins, reports, pamphlets, etc from national and international research institutes. The collection of the Library are kept in both closed and opened access systems arranged according to the Dewey Decimal Classification, 19th edition. The books in the reference section are all kept in closed system for consultation within the Library only. During the current year, the Library has procured the latest edition of Britannica Encyclopaedia 1-32 vols., 15th edition 2005, World of learning 55th edition 2005 and wealth of India, 2005 edition to its collection. The library has a Server and a terminal providing Internet connectivity through BSNL for the Students, teachers, and research scholars. It also provides facilities like computer printing, scanning, CD writing and photocopying of materials.
Lumami Library - It has total number of books - 12246. It has subscription to 66 Indian Journals, 7 Newspapers, 9 Magazines. It also has Internet connectivity and the the library is equipped with Internet facility and INFLIBNET (SOUL) program.
Research - Some of the departments received the backing of ICAR, CSIR, DBT and DST for their research through projects. A vast potential is untapped in collaborative research with foreign countries and with others specialized agencies and other Universities of the country.
Sports - The university has a Sports Board which organizes tournaments and coaches teams in seven events.
The Alumni Association - It has been recently formed which is taking keen interest in the development of the university.
Financial Support - Most of the students enjoy financial support provided by the respective state governments.
Special Programmes - These are being offered for personality development of the students, sensitising the students on communication skill, utilizing the connectivity facilities for the improvement of the knowledge of the students, developing team spirit, developing perspective on community orientation.

It is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, with the latest grade of C++.
