Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), New Delhi is a Private University specialising in the field of Mass Communication. IIMC, New Delhi is managed by the IIMC Society which is an autonomous body registered under the Societies Registration Act 1867. It is funded by the Government of India through the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Govt. of India. IIMC, Delhi is also the headquarter of the Institute and there are five Regional Centres in Aizawl (Mizoram), Amravati (Maharashtra), Dhenkanal (Odisha), Jammu (J&K) and Kottyam (Kerala). The Institute faculty comprises of eminent media persons as its members. IIMC, New Delhi was inaugurated on 17th August, 1965, by the then Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Smt. Indira Gandhi, the Institute started with a small staff, including two consultants from UNESCO. In the first few years, the Institute organised training courses mainly for Central Information Service Officers and undertook research studies on a modest scale. Then, in 1969, a major international training programme, the Postgraduate Diploma Course in Journalism for Developing Countries, for middle level working journalists from Afro-Asian countries, was started. A number of specialised short courses of one week to three months’ duration were subsequently started by the Institute to meet the training needs of communication professionals working in various media/publicity outfits of the central/state governments and public sector organisations. Over the years, IIMC has expanded and now offers regular Post-graduate Diploma Courses.
The Institute also runs regular short-term academic programmes for personnel from different media units of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting. A number of specialized short-term courses, ranging from one week to 12 weeks’ duration are also conducted for meeting the professional training needs of Defence officials, Police officers of various states and of those working in various media and publicity organizations of the Central and State Governments, as well as Public Sector Enterprises.
Facilities at IIMC, New Delhi
Hostels - The IIMC campus hosts three hostels. The hostels can accommodate approximately 100 students. Students of PG diploma courses running at the Delhi campus can avail the facility of hostel. The other hostel with the capacity of 40 rooms is available for Indian Information Service officers and the students of Diploma Course in Development Journalism.
Library - The Institute has the largest specialized library in mass communication in the country. It has collected about 30,000 books and journals on different aspects of mass communication and allied subjects such as economics, political science, international relations, sociology, psychology and current affairs. The Periodical Section of the library subscribes to more than 100 periodicals and over 40 leading newspapers. It has documented about 20,000 articles from periodicals on various aspects of mass communication. Indian and Foreign journals covering a wide spectrum of mass communication such as Communication Research, Journal of Public Relations, Gazette, Journal of broadcasting, etc. have also been subscribed.
Computer Laboratories - During 2011-12, IIMC joined the National Knowledge Network (NKN), a state-of-the-art, multi-gigabit, pan-India broadband network for providing a unified high speed network backbone for all knowledge-related institutions in the country. Being part of the National Knowledge Network, IIMC receives broadband internet seamlessly at speeds of 1Gbps or higher. The purpose of such a knowledge network goes to the very core of the country’s quest for building quality institutions with requisite research facilities and creating a pool of highly trained professionals. The high speed NKN enables scientists, researchers, communicators and students from different backgrounds and diverse geographies to work closely for advancing human development in critical and emerging areas for generation and dissemination of knowledge in various fields.
The Institute also has a back-up 2Mbps broadband internet connection through the NIC, state-of-the-art computers with the latest configurations and software for imparting instruction to its students and trainees. These facilities provide learning opportunities for the students of the Institute and inter-alia include three Workplaces – Computer Labs, Multimedia and DTPs available to different groups at a time. The Institute also has teleprinter lines from UNI and Varta, which pour in the latest news 24 hours a day.
Video Studio - The Institute has a modern production studio, equipped with digital cameras with synch and special effects generators. The editing consoles comprise I-Mac, FCP Mac-Pro digital video editing systems and on-line digital video editing. For radio transmission, the Institute has separate sound recording, FM and voice-over studios, which are used for imparting training in Radio and TV technology. These facilities provide a good knowledge base amongst the students and trainees in the field of electronic journalism. Digital still cameras, along with accessories are also made available for training in audio-visual and print areas.
Audio Studio - The Institute is equipped with the requisite facilities for radio news-gathering: professional tape and digital recorders, microphones and other accessories. For radio transmissions, the Institute has separate sound recording, FM and voice-over Studios, which are also utilized for imparting training in radio technology.

Manch – It is the name of the auditorium and is adequately equipped for seminars, conferences, presentations, cultural programmes etc. It has a seating capacity of 418 and a covered area of 1232 sq.mts.

Seminars and Conferences – These are organised on regular basis and use various themes and topical media issues. Leading media houses and eminent practitioners are invited to deliberate and discuss issues of importance. These help in creating a forum for exchange of thought and expression, besides helping in developing sound concepts, communication processes and reference material for researchers and scholars.
