Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, the sixth member of the IIT fraternity, was established in 1994. It is an autonomous engineering and technology-oriented institute of higher education established by the Government of India, located in Guwahati, in the state of Assam in India. The academic programme of IIT Guwahati commenced in 1995. At present the Institute has eleven departments covering all the major engineering and science disciplines, offering B. Tech., B. Des., M. Tech., Ph.D. and M.Sc. programmes. Within a short period of time, IIT Guwahati has been able to build up the necessary infrastructure for carrying out advanced research and has been equipped with state-of-the-art scientific and engineering instruments. Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati's campus is on a sprawling 285 hectares plot of land on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra around 20 kms. from the heart of the city. With the majestic Brahmaputra on one side, and with hills and vast open spaces on others, the campus provides an ideal setting for learning. The Academic activities of the IIT Guwahati began in 1995 with the B.Tech programme in three departments - Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. At present the Institute has eleven departments and three academic centres with the responsibilities of teaching and research which are offering B.Tech, BDes, MSc,MA, M.Tech, MDes and Ph.D programmes. The institute is wholly residential and all students shall be required to reside in, and be members of the hostel to which they are assigned at the time of registration. Only in exceptional circumstances a student may be permitted to change from one hostel to another. The 74,000 square metre academic complex houses the academic departments, their laboratories, classrooms, etc. An administrative building has the offices of the Institute.

Transportation - It is around 20 km from the heart of the city and around 35 minutes drive from the airport.
Commuting to the Institute from the city - For commuting from the station to the North Guwahati campus, tata sumos and auto-rickshaws are available. IIT Guwahati has also its own transportation facilities to ply to and fro from North Guwahati campus to the city.
Flights to Guwahati - There are direct flights from Delhi and Kolkata offered by Indian Airlines, Air Sahara, Jet Airways, Air Deccan, Kingfisher, Spicejet, Indigo. Fares of direct flights ex-Delhi starts at around Rs.3000 (conditions apply). Connecting flights via Kolkata are available and the charge is around Rs.5000 (Economy Class). Getting to the IITG from the airport (which may take around 40 minutes) will cost another Rs.300 in a reserved taxi.

Other Transport - Taxis are available for transport within the city also but are without meters and fares have to be negotiated and the same applies to auto-rickshaws. There is also an extensive network of city bus services.

Student Hostel - All the students of the Institute have been provided with hostel rooms in the campus. The accommodation is single-seater. These hostels are equipped with all modern amenities. There are facilities for sports and recreation such as satellite TV, indoor games and a gymnasium. Facilities for outdoor games like volleyball, basketball and football are also there. Every room in the the hostels are provided with network connectivity. Separate accommodation is provided to the girl students. A round-the-clock canteen is in operation to cater to the needs of the students.
IT Facilities - IT facilities include a campus computer network on a Gigabit Ethernet backbone with access points in every hostel room, an internal EPABX, high capacity internet connections (including access from residences). All faculty and staff members of the institute are provided with PCs. All these computers are hooked on to the campus network. Most of the office work is automated with a view to improve efficiency and reduce the use of papers. Internet and e-mail facility are provided through two leased lines. Both these facilities are provided to the faculty members, officers and students.
Library - The Central Library, one of the important central facilities of the Institute, currently has 72,000 volumes, including textbooks, reference books, conference proceedings, back volumes, standards, and non-book material such as CD-ROMs, audio tapes, video tapes and more.

NPTEL - National Programme Of Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) is a Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) initiative to promote quality engineering education in the country through video and web based learning material. The seven Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore were requested to produce web-based and video-based courses in 5 disciplines of engineering as well as in Science, Humanities & Management areas. A total of 120 web-based courses and 115 video-based courses has been produced in these disciplines. EDC - Entrepreneurial Development Cell (EDC) is a special interest group under Technical Board of the Students Gymkhana Council, IIT Guwahati and is responsible for activities and initiatives which would instil and promote the spirit of entrepreneurship amongst the IITG community as well as the youth of North-East India. To foster an environment which is conducive to entrepreneurship, EDC organises lectures, events and workshops to create a platform for the students to realize their potential and showcase their bright ideas in front of public and industry.
Research - The Institute conducts researches within its academic programmes under all the departments and the academic centres. School - A Kendriya Vidyalaya has been established inside the school campus that houses classes from primary to 10th standard.
Guest House - The IIT Guest House provides accommodation to Institute guests, visiting faculty and guardians of students.
Sports & Recreation - The Institute has a Gymkhana to oversee the cultural and sports activities. The Gymkhana has a student General Secretary, a Sports Secretary, Academic Secretary, a Cultural Secretary - all of whom belong to the student community and are elected by the students. The Gymkhana arranges cultural activities for the benefit of the students. A cultural festival called Alcheringa and Techniche, the technical festival of IIT Guwahati is organized every year. A sub-chapter of SPIC-MACAY Guwahati has also been started. The Gymkhana has a good collection of musical equipment for the use of its students. It also arranges different sports activities. Indoor sports facilities are available in the hostels. Outdoor games are also arranged.
Transport Facility - To reach the institute from the city, there is the institute bus service that runs regularly to and from the city.
Health Care - Medical facilities are provided to the staff and students through the institute dispensary located within the campus. The Institute currently has three medical officers, all of whom are specialists. Patients requiring intensive indoor treatment are referred to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) where modern facilities for treatment are available. Apart from GMCH, the institute has several approved private nursing homes including the Guwahati Neurological Research Centre (GNRC). The Institute also has a few approved diagnostic laboratories where patients can undergo routine and special investigations as and when required. The Institute's own 19 bedded Hospital is now functional.
Training & Placement Cell - The Training & Placement Cell handles all aspects of campus placements for the graduating students at IIT Guwahati. The T & P Cell is well equipped with excellent infrastructure to support each and every stage of the placement processes. The T & P staff members assist in arranging Pre-Placement Talks, Written Tests, Group Discussions, and Interviews etc.
Alfaaz - It is the annual literary festival of IIT Guwahati, is a marked event which provides a platform for the cream of the students from the top notch colleges of our country to come together so that their talents can be showcased, appreciated and applauded. Alfaaz is all about the people who make it happen. Totally funded by IIT Guwahati itself, the Alfaaz is an all-students venture.
