Don Bosco University is an institute established by Don Bosco Society, Azara, Guwahati in 2008. Don Bosco Society, variously known as ‘The Salesians of Don Bosco' (SDB), ‘The Don Bosco Educational Society', etc., was founded by St. John Bosco (1815-1888), an eminent educationist in Italy. The society is also a Religious Order of the Catholic Church. As a society, it has a global network of educational and social service organizations which include 14 universities, 58 institutions of higher education and thousands of schools and social development centres. It has over 32,000 members working in 132 countries catering to the less privileged and marginalized sections of society. The idea to setup Don Bosco University came up in 2006 and on 10th January 2007, The Rector Major and the General Council of Don Bosco Society gave the final approval (Approval No. Prot. 015 dated 10th January 2007). The approval in the form of proposal was submitted by Don Bosco Society to the Government of Assam on 8th November 2007. The Expert Committee of the government upon examining the proposal gave its positive recommendation. On 29th March 2008, acting upon the recommendation, the government issued the Letter of Intent (LOI) to the Salesians of Don Bosco to establish the University at Guwahati in Assam (Letter No. AHE.384/2007/49 dated 29th March 2008). The Letter of Intent was followed by an Ordinance of the State government on 3rd December 2008 (The Assam Don Bosco University Ordinance, 2008, dated 3rd December 2008), following which the University was formally inaugurated by Shri Tarun Gogoi, the Chief Minister of Assam, on 6th December 2008.
