University of Lucknow or Lucknow University is a Public University. It has under its ambit 60 Associated Colleges which impart teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels to approximately 50,000 students. The University follows the Semester System of examination in all the post-graduate courses. It is affiliated with University Grants Commission; Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU); Association of Indian Universities (AIU); Distance Education Council (DEC). Other accreditations include the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC); the National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE); Bar Council of India (BCI). Raja Sir Mohammad Ali Mohammad Khan, Khan Bahadur, K.C.I.E. of Mahmudabad, wrote an article to the columns of "The Pioneer''. In this, he emphasised the idea of creating a University at Lucknow. From here the idea of creating the university grew. Mohammad Khan's idea was further promoted by Sir Harcourt Butler, K.C.S.I., K.C.I.E who was appointed Lieutenant-Governor of the United Provinces. The first step to bring the University into being was taken when a General Committee of educationists and persons interested in university education appointed for the purpose, met in conference at Government House, Lucknow, on November 10, 1919. At this meeting, Sir Harcourt Butler, who was in the chair, outlined the proposed scheme for the new university. With further steps taken into consideration, the Lucknow University Act, No. V of 1920 received the assent of the Lieutenant-Governor on November 1, 1920, and that of the Governor-General on November 25, 1920. On July 17, 1921, for the first time, the University undertook both formal and informal teaching.
Constituent Institutes and Centres
Institute of Management Sciences - The Institute is located on the second campus of the University (near Engineering College). It provides 13 courses at three levels: Post Graduate, Under Graduate and Diploma. Some of these are BBA, BMS, BBA, BBA (Tourism), PGDFMPM, PGDTM, MBA etc.
Institute of Tourism Studies - It is a premier institute providing high-quality education in the field of tourism management and providing consultancy to the industry. It offers various courses such as MBA- Tourism, BBA- Tourism, PGDTM, Diploma in International Airlines Ticketing & CRS, TTM etc..It is approved by A.I.C.T.E. and receives financial support from U.G.C.
Institute of Development Studies - It provides 2 years full time Masters Degree Programme in Marketing Economics and Management, Master of Arts in Development Studies (MA-DS), Master in Population and Environment etc. The Institute has already launched Ph.D. programme in the field of inter-disciplinary research and developmental Activities in Organisational Behaviour, Economics, Management of Finance, Human Resource Development, Sociology, Polity, Administration etc.
Regional Centre for Urban and Environmental Studies - It provides Training and Research in Municipal Administration.
UGC Academic Staff College - The ASC conducts Orientation Programmes (OP) and Refresher Courses (RC) regularly, besides seminars and workshops in different areas of higher education.
Institute of Women Studies - It provides a two-year post-graduate course leading to the degree of Master of Arts in Women's Studies.
Population Research Centre - It involved in carrying out research and studies on demographic features, patterns and trends in Uttar Pradesh, their underlying factors and their impact on economic and human resource development. It also undertakes studies to extend research support to the changing strategies of the country's Family Welfare Programme.
Institute of Mass Communication in Science and Technology - It provides 2 Master's programmes - M.Sc. in Mass Communication in Science & Technology.

Facilities
Hostel & Accommodation - There are 16 hostels for boys and girls, with 5 hostels meant exclusively for girl students only.
Library - Tagore Library is the Central Research library of the University of Lucknow. The Tagore Library houses not only books, but also has a good collection of rare manuscripts, paintings, art objects, ancient coins, theses and research journals. It has approximately 5,50,000 Books, 60,000 Periodicals, 2000 Manuscripts, 10,000 Thesis and 4000 Electronic Journals.
Internet Facility - Computer Centre is providing Internet facilities to all departments of Arts, Science, Commerce, Law, Education, Tagore Library, Co-operative Lending Library, V.C. Office and Residence, Registrar Office, Account Office and various other departments of the University directly to their own access/Computers.
Intercom Facility - Computer Centre has established an EPABX Exchange to provide an intercom telephone facility to all the offices of L.U. as well as the various departments situated in L.U. campus including the offices of the Deans, HODs, Libraries, Examination, Accounts, Establishment, Dispensary Guesthouse, Proctor & all the utility services concerned. University EPABX Exchange provides more than 250 intercom connection holders at this facility since 2002 and working smoothly till date.
Sports - The University has a sports association - Lucknow University Athletic Association which is involved in sporting activities of the university. Various sports facilities include Maharaj Singh Gymnasium, Paranjpe Sports Pavilion, and lush green grass fit for playing Football. Hockey, Cricket etc. Athletic Track of standard size has also been laid on the grassy ground.
NCC - National Cadet Corps has an Army and a Naval wing.
NSS - National Service Scheme organises various socially relevant programmes like AIDS Awareness programme, Health and Immunization/Participation in pulse polio drive etc.
Training and Placement Cell - It arranges training (internship) for students and invites various organization i.e. law firms and government organisations for campus recruitment. It also provides personal training and career to the students.
Alumni - The Alumni are involved in the process of development of the University. The University of Lucknow Alumni Foundation aims at creating a pool of human resources that has been a part of the University.
