The Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University, Kanpur, has been on the map of higher education for more than three decades. Located in one of the biggest industrial metropolis of State of Uttar Pradesh. Also known as Kanpur University, it stands as a hallmark of higher education. During the close of the 19th century, the Society for Propagation of Gospel of Christ (S. G. P. C.) successfully introduced the classes of higher learning in its schools in Kanpur. Gradually the demand for institutions for higher education in the fast growing commercial metropolis gained momentum. The Radha Krishnan Commission (1949) suggested the establishment of a university at Kanpur as it was felt that the Agra University to which the colleges at Kanpur were affiliated was getting increasingly overburdened. In order to meet the popular demand and to reduce the burden of Agra University, Kanpur University was established by an Act of U.P. State Legislature in the year 1966. Since its inception the Kanpur University has made considerable growth both in the number of the colleges affiliated to it, and the diversification and varieties of subjects taught.
Today it has 170 colleges spread over fifteen districts of the state, affiliated to it. About 2.75 Lac students appear every year in the various undergraduate and postgraduate examinations in the faculties of Arts, Commerce, Science, Education, Law, Agriculture, Medicine, Ayurvedic & Unani, Engineering and Technology, Business Management, Life Science, and Advanced Studies in Social Science etc. During the thirty-seven year of its existence, the C.S.J.M. University, Kanpur has established itself firmly as a quality teaching and research institution. It is fulfilling a great need of education in the State.

Facilities
Hostel Facility - The University has three well-furnished girls’ hostels with a total capacity of 500 inmates, a boys hostel with the capacity of 400 inmates. All the hostels have mess facilities at very moderate rates, 24 hour power supply, common hall, TV room, reading rooms, telephone, recreational and sports facilities with a tight security system. The students are allowed to use their own computer in the rooms.
Lecture Hall Complex - A separate lecture hall complex has been constructed in the University campus. This Lecture hall complex comprises lecture hall which provides a facility of 72 lectures in a day. The lecture hall complex is equipped with all modern technique required for effective lecture delivering
Central Library - The Central Library of C.S.J.M. University, Kanpur was established in 1968. In the beginning it was housed in a hall of University Administrative Building. In 1993 it was shifted to the present library building. The renovation of the building of the central library was started in 2003. Now it has a centrally located magnificent three-storied building with all modern facilities. It is having a seating capacity for about 700 users. It has a collection of over 85,000 books, which consists of books, thesis. and bound volumes of journals. In addition to this, about 130 titles of National and International print journals are being subscribed by the library. It caters to the library and information requirement of more than 6000 users which mainly consist of campus students, faculty, staff of the University as well as research scholars from about 320 affiliated colleges.
Library has it's own computer subnet with most modern Cat-6 network technology. It is connected with the campus LAN using optical fiber network. The library automation is being done using SOUL Software. So far it has completed its database of about 60,000 books, 3000 thesis, which are available online through its web OPAC. It also has Online access facility to about 20,000 full text journals and about 5000 full text books on its University LAN.
Computer Center - The University has state of the art computer center. The center is well equipped with computing resources and caters to the academic needs of the University. The computer center provides hands on experience to the users and always keeps pace with the advancement of technology. The faculty and students in the university campus have free access to the computer center and use internet facility available therein. The Centre is equipped with the most advanced computer systems, line printers, laser printers, scanner, CD writers, zip drives etc. The computer center also offers courses like Diploma in Computer application (D.C.A.), Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Sciences (P.G.D.C.S.) and Certificate courses in Computer Sciences.
Multipurpose Hall - The multipurpose Hall is situated in the center of University campus. It has a capacity of more than 1000 persons. The hall is used for indoor games such as badminton, table tennis, cultural programmers like classical dance, debate, poster making, rangoli, cartooning, on act play, mimicry etc. The Inter collegiate youth festival, north zone badminton cultural programme spandan 2004 have been organized in the year 2003-2004 in the multipurpose hall. The hall has 60x40 meters of space with wooden surface alongwith lighting facilities. It is used for indoor games, like Badminton, Table Tennis, Wrestling, Gymnastics, Taekwando, Chess, Carrom with audio-video facilities.
Bank - The University campus has computerized branches of two Nationalized Banks viz.Union Bank of India and Bank of Baroda to cater to the banking needs of students. Fully equipped with ATM and Core Banking facility, the banks play a key role in meeting the financial needs of students staying far off from their homes.
Shopping Complex - For students coming to study in the University , the internal shopping complex is a real boon. This shopping complex has all those commodities to offer which one needs in daily life, be it books or toiletries, clothes or grocery. You name it and it is available in the shopping complex. The shopping complex also has a xerox machine which comes in handy for the students while preparing notes etc. The shopping complex opens early in the morning and remains open till late in the night .
Stadium - A huge stadium has been constructed in the University campus. It is used for sports activities like 400 meter. race, hammer throw, long jump, high jump, cricket tournament ,football, hockey, basketball, handball, volley ball, tennis, kabaddi, kho-kho, etc . The stadium is open for sports activities of students, teachers, officers and employees of the University and students of affiliated colleges of the University. The stadium is the venue for annual Inter college Athletics Championship.
Campus School - The University also has a campus school where wards of both University staff members and outsiders come to have their primary schooling. This school has a big playground where kids have a good time. Situated close to the houses of University staff members , this school offers a strong foundation to its young students.
Health Centre - The University has a health centre which provides Allopathic treatment. It is housed in an independent building. It provides primary medical care to students, faculty, employees including residents of the campus. The services also include general medical checkup, blood test including OPD. The cases which require special attention are referred to GSVM Medical College which is a constituent college of this University
Police Station - Situated close to the main gate is a police station which is responsible for maintaining law and order within the University Campus.This police station plays an important role in conducting the exams smoothly. The presence of this police station makes the University Campus perfectly safe for both students as well as families of University staff members.
Post Office - Although these days internet is being widely used , the University still has a post office inside the campus for those requirements which cannot be fulfilled by the internet . The campus branch of the post office provides the facility of opening saving accounts, sending speed post , parcels etc. Situated in the administrative building, this fully computerized branch of the post office serves as the nervous system of the University.
Temple - Only few people know its exact age but it is believed that this temple has been here for quite some time. This temple has been renovated by the University staff and is a venue for rites, rituals and celebrations and provides a common platform for all sections of the society. This temple has both religious and social significance.
