About Indian Institute of Information Technology - IIIT Allahabad

IIIT is the generic name for several Institutes of Information Technology in India, each a mini university in itself. The Indian Institute of Information Technology Allahabad (IIIT-A) was established in 1999, as a centre of excellence in Information Technology and allied areas. The institute was conferred the "Deemed University" status by Govt. of India in the year 2000. The Institute thus became empowered to have a perpetual seal and award degrees subsequent to the conduct of its own examinations. The institute owes its existence to the vision and untiring efforts of Hon'ble Prof. Murli Manohar Joshi, Union Minister of Human Resource Development, Science and Technology and Ocean Development, GoI. The beautiful 100 acre campus, situated at Deoghat, Jhalwa is designed meticulously on the Penrose Geometry pattern (styled on patterns developed by internationally acclaimed scholar and mathematician, Roger Penrose). The institute is established on the outskirts of Allahabad. The grading system is broadly based on the pattern of other IITs.  A video conferencing facility for networking with leading institutions in India as well as abroad is also in the works. The campus-based Gyan Vani regularly broadcasts educational programming. Besides the B. Tech. program, the institute also offers M. Tech. in Bioinformatics, Wireless Communication, Software Engineering and Intelligent Systems and MBA (IT), Master of Science in Cyber Law and Information Security and Doctoral degrees. The graduate students have access to the highest levels of industrial training, project experience and expert instruction. B.Tech program which is currently offered through AIEEE. In M.Tech program admission is offered through special admission tests and interviews conducted by the institute for the candidates having valid GATE score. A few seats are also reserved for industry sponsored candidates for whom GATE score is not mandatory. Apart from these MBA(IT) program and Master’s program in Cyber law and Information Security are also provided. Computers  are issued to all students by the Maintenance Cell, immediately upon their arrival and on possession of Identity Cards.

Location  The IIITA campus is located at Deoghat Jhalwa (Peepalgaon Road), which is on the outskirts of Allahabad. It is 10 km from the town centre and 7 km from the main railway station.

Transportation - The Allahabad city is well connected by air, rail and road to near by metros. Railway services to this city from all the mega cities of the country are excellent and quite comfortable.

Facilities

Hostels - The Institute is fully residential. All the hostels are provided with modern boarding and lodging facilities. There are separate hostels for boys and Girls.All Hostels are provided with Round-the-Clock free Electricity and Water Coolers, supported by Aqua Guard arrangement. All rooms are also provided with Internet Connectivity. The Mess in each Hostel caters hygienic food to all inmates. In their own interest students are advised not to eat at any of the unauthorized outlets outside. At the Hostel, each student is provided with a Cot, Table , Chair and an Almirah Space. The suggested list of items that may be required by a Hosteller during the course of his /her stay on Campus is likely to include - One bucket with 2 mugs + soap with soap case + door lock, bedding with warm clothing, blanket/quilt & mosquito net. Temperature at Allahabad & Amethi ranges between 5-7 C in Winters & 45-49 degree C in Summers so appropriate clothing is required.

Stipend - All M.Tech. students eligible for stipend must fill in the stipend form (being mailed as an attachment) and after getting it forwarded from the respective faculty member submit the same in Dean's Office. This must be completed by 5th of each month. Forms received after 5th of each month shall be processed in the next month & no interim application shall be entertained.

Railway Concession - Institute issues Railway Concession Forms to students travelling to their homes during End Semester Break Periods. Railway Reservations can be made by using the Internet facility at the Institute. Identity card number displayed on the Identity card can be used for the purpose.

Scholarships - The Institute has the facility of merit scholarships for its students of the value of Rs1500/- per month for BTech, MBA (IT) and MPCLIS students. Students (GATE Qualified) in MTech are awarded stipend @ Rs.5000/- per month. The amount is subject to change. It is awarded to toppers in each speciality every year, based upon their past performance at the Institute. Students from economically weaker sections of the Society (those having income less than Rs. 1 Lakh per year), are granted scholarships from the Ministry of Social welfare. Application Forms for the same are available from Financial Adviser of the Institute. In addition Institute encourages students to participate in the several ongoing projects of the Institute to be benefited under the earn-while-you-learn program. Scholarships for Single Girl Child, Pratibha Scholarship, etc. from several other agencies are also available to IIIT-A students.

Medical Assistance - Institute has a tie up with Nazareth Hospital and Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital which are Multi speciality Hospitals with facility for indoor treatment.

Bank Account - All students MUST open a bank account and communicate their Account Number to Mr. N K Tripathi / Mr. D N Shukla in the Accounts Department as soon as possible, so that their Stipend / Stipend can be processed immediately upon receipt of their Stipend Form from Dean?s Office/ Scholarship form from respective agency. Alternatively, students can e-mail their account no. at [email protected] along with their Name and Enrolment Number.

Faculty - Core Faculty consists of Professors, Associate Professors, Asstt. Professors and Faculty Associates (Senior Lecturers) who are highly accomplished in the academics relating to IT. Total number of Faculty Members in position is 27.

Technical Support - Besides there are highly qualified Network Engineers/Managers, Senior Design Engineers and Computer Engineers to help conduct intricate experiments and practicals with the help of most sensitive and sophisticated equipments in the electronics and other laboratories of the institute. Total number of support staff including administration, finance, establishment, etc. is 29 in addition there are project and contractual staff assisting the Institute.

Placements and Training - The Institute has a full fledged Training and Placement Section that takes care of the students requirements. It has been observed that companies who visit the campus generally prefers first class candidates. The Institute therefore does not guarantee that each student shall be placed through it. Sponsored category candidates admitted to various Post Graduate Programs are also apprised that Institute is not responsible for their placements.

Leave - All M.Tech. Students are eligible for 10 days Medical Leave (only upon the specific recommendation of the Institutes Authorised Medical Attendants. Medical Certificates from other sources are not accepted for Medical Leave purposes.) and a total of One Months leave in one Calendar Year (Leave, other than Medical Leave, can be availed only during End semester periods). Application must be submitted at least three days in advance from the intended date of start of leave, to the Dean's Office (Academic). Students must also apprise the Warden of their Hostel before leaving the station and also on their return. All B.Tech. MBA & MPCLIS students must also submit three days advance application in the Directorate for going out of station and intimate to the Warden of the respective Hostel about their absence.

Achievements

Ranking - IIIT Allahabad ranked 8th by India Today  - It is a matter of honour for the IIIT-A family as India Today, India's leading magazine has ranked IIIT Allahabad among the Top 10 Engineering Institutes of India.The most important fact to be considered is that IIIT-A is the youngest institute to be included in India Today's top 10 ranking. It was established just 8 years ago in 1999.

Last year also IIIT Allahabad was ranked 11th by Nasscom-Dataquest ranking and was ranked 4th by the same in Placements. It is a matter of fact that IIIT-A has one of the best placements in India as many of the leading companies of the world visit the campus for placements.

International Participation - IIIT-A students have made their mark in every field related to Computer Science and Information Technology. It has produced one of the best programmers from India with one of the IIIT-A teams representing India in the World Finals of the 30th ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest.

Award - Even this year there are a number of achievements to be counted latest being a IIIT-A team winning third prize at Microsoft Imagine Cup Software Design Contest.

Collaborations with industry - An Indo-Russian Centre of Biotechnology specializing in bioinformatics is operational, and an Indo-US facility for a Universal Digital Library is being set up.
