Assam University came into existence through Assam (Central) University Act, 1989 (Act. No. XIII). It was established in 1994. The campus in an area of 600 acres surrounded by lakes and mountains provides an ideal environment for academic pursuit. The University is situated in South Assam, bordering Bangladesh, Mizoram, Manipur, Maghalaya, and Nagaland. The Barak river flows across this region known as Barak valley. The University has nine Schools on major disciplines.There are 29 Departments under these nine Schools. The five districts under the jurisdiction of Assam University have as many as 53 Colleges, which speak of the depth of the intellectual and educational interests in the region. Drawing its 230 plus faculty from many disciplines, from all over the country, the university sustains a multidisciplinary approach to higher education. The University has gradually started attracting students from the neighbouring states. Assam University is a teaching-cum-affiliating University.

Facilities
Hostel - Hostel facilities for the students or research scholars are available. Accommodations in one Gents Hostel and one Ladies Hostel are being provided to the deserving students.
Computer Centre - It is running a One Year Post Graduate Diploma in Information Technology (PGDIT) course from the current academic session (2008- 09). The Computer Centre is one of the 62 centres in India for conducting the LIVE Lecture sessions in the “Virtual Classroom” set up under CEC-UGC EDUSAT Network. The Centre has three labs supported by two IBM Rack Servers & are equipped with various licensed software.
Transport - Three buses for the students ply between Silchar and the campus (about 20 KM. from the town) daily for bringing the students from Silchar town and dropping them back. Besides this, three buses along with a chartered bus for staff also ply between Silchar and the campus.
Major Scientific Equipments - With the one time assistance from the UGC and the funds available from other agencies like DST, DAE and CSIR the various Science Departments have procured the following sate-of-the-art instruments :

The department is an initiative to promote arts and started in the year of 2017. Concentrating on Dance, Drama and Vocaland Instrumental Music (Tabla), as an academic discipline within the structure of University, aiming to give training in concepts, basic principles of mentioned arts and practices of respective arts. Further it gives hands on experience and shape up the students to be a successful artist in the society, where live interactions during the course can lead to new terrains of experience and intellectuality.
At present, The course pattern is a combination of both theory and practice though art in education, interaction with audience, exploring to the folklore of region, cultural identity, tangible skills and intellectual ability, multi disciplinary choices, Dance and Music. Multi lingual and multi media productions are exploring as a combination of Drama, Dance and Vocal Music and Instrumental Music (Tabla) by including allied arts like Painting, sculpture and Film TV productions through the neighborhood departmental supports.
Library - Assam University Central library located inside the campus is available for students besides some small departmental libraries. The Library has a holding of about 52,557 books. The Library subscribes to 13 foreign and 186 Indian journals, 16 news papers, and 12 popular magazines. Assam University Library is one of the libraries selected by U.G.C. for automation and networking under INFLIBNET Programme in the year 1998-1999. The Library automation is under progress and a database of 25000 books have already been created using SOUL software provided by INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad.
