About Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology - NIT Allahabad

Motilal Nehru National Institute Of Technology (MNNIT), Allahabad was established in year 1961 as a joint enterprise of Govt. of India and Govt. of U.P. in accordance with the scheme of establishment of REC. The foundation stone of the college was laid by the first Prime Minister of India, Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru on the 3rd of may, 1961 on a site spreading over 222 acres on the banks of the river Ganga. The main building of college was inaugurated by another illustrious son of India, Prime Minister Sri Lal Bahadur Shastri on 18th of April, 1965. MNNIT, Allahabad was formerly known as Motilal Nehru Regional Engineering College, Allahabad. With effect from June 26 of 2002 the college became deemed university and is now known as Motilal Nehru National Institute of technology. The institute offers 9 undergraduate programs in Engineering of four year duration and 19 graduate programs of two year duration. Undergraduate programs lead to the B.Tech. degrees, while the graduate programs in Engineering lead to M.Tech. degrees. The institute also enrols Ph.D. candidate The faculty members are actively involved in research and consultancy. A large number of research projects and consultancy have been undertaken, several of them being of national & Global importance. The students are extensively exposed to cross-cultural environment as candidates from various other countries such as Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Mauritius, Malaysia, Iran, Yemen, Iraq, Palestine and Thailand also join MNNIT for various undergraduate and post-graduate programs.

The institute offers the following Subsidiary Programs:


Training facilities of Undergraduate students of the Institute are available in the Industrial Estate in the academic areas of Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Chemical and other branches of engineering.

1.  NTMIS - National Technical Manpower Information Systems. The activities of the Nodal Centre are :

  • This computerised system provides an up-to-date data bank on engineering graduates and diploma holders.
  • Estimation and Forecasting of requirements of different fields of engineering and technical manpower.
  • Collection and Storage of information and its distribution and retrieval.
  • Providing data to the MHRD , planning commission , state Govts., public and private sector industries.
  • Providing information regarding expansion in engineering education, modification of  curricula, improvement in the quality of teaching and strategy for employment  generation.

2.  Research And Consultancy Cell - The Institute attaches great importance to research and thus academic faculty is actively engaged in research and consultancy. These activities are looked after by the R & C Cell headed by Dean (R & C). The R & C Cell has been established with the objective of promoting and fostering research and consultancy and related services. It monitors all activities undertaken by various departments of the Institute. The vitality of the research at Institute is clearly evident from the externally funded schemes from organizations like UGC, CSIR, DST, CMRS etc. The faculty has also extended its expertise and experience to various public and private sector organizations through a number of sponsored projects. Interested parties who want to take the technical help should contact the Dean Research and Consultancy, and we will be happy to offer solution using latest laboratory equipment and highly qualified academic staff.

3.  SC/ST Pre-Examination Training Centre - Under a scheme of the Ministry of Welfare, Government of India, New Delhi is a Pre- Examination Training Centre for coaching Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes candidates for Engineering Services Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission, New Delhi with total intake of 40 trainees is being run by the College since 1973. The trainees at the Centre are provided with free coaching, library and medical facilities and a stipend of Rs.500/- per month per trainee towards boarding, lodging and other expenses.

4.  Sequential M.Tech - The Institute offers the opportunity to  working people to study for Masters Degree in various disciplines on a part time basis over 5 semesters. The classes for these courses will be organised during the summer months. Not all departments are offering this program currently. The actual number of courses for the particular session to be offered shall be announced through the news papers along with the other details of application. It is a self supporting unit within the Institute and participates in organising of seminars, conferences, symposia etc. This unit also organises short term courses and  special course modules and sponsored courses on request from industries

5.  Quality Improvement Program- Teachers in engineering institutions get opportunities to study under the quality improvement program (QIP). The QIP selections are made centrally and announcement for applications are made each year. Teachers will have to send in their applications through their institutions. The list of applicants qualifying for interview / test will be called for interview at MNNIT. Qualification in GATE is not a pre condition for selection. Teachers continue to remain as employee of their college during the period of study.

Facilities

Hostel - MNNIT is fully residential institution with seven hostels for boys and two for girls. One hostel is exclusively for post graduate students.

Central Library - The Central Library has 1,04,382 Collection of books and bound periodicals. It also subscribes 53 Indian and 237 International technical periodicals. In order to facilitate all the readers in selecting the reading materials of their choice, the access to stacks is open to its members. Keeping the library on modern techniques, the reading materials has been classified and catalogued as Dewey Decimal Classification and Anglo- American Cataloguing Rules-II. It works as nerve centre of the institution by keeping the knowledge of students and faculty members update. Information data bank is constantly updated and facilities are added. The present library area  spreads over 2455.49 sqm. The functionaries of central library is guided by the set-up of LLRC and Working Group.

Some of the features of the Library:

  1. JCCC – J-Gate Custom Content for Consortia, is a customized solution for accessing and sharing journal literature subscribed by all the IITs, IISc and IIMs, either individually and collectively through INDEST Consortium. 23 National Institutes of Technology ( have joined this community of resource sharing consortium) to whom the benefits of JCCC@INDEST is extended as secondary members.
  2. JCCC@INDEST is a common gateway to access 6327 e-Journals from 1309 publishers, subscribed by IITs, IISc. IIMs (17 Libraries).

I.T. Facilities - The whole college is well connected by 100 Mbps LAN, and all the hostels are provided with Internet facility. The computer centre is well equipped with state of the art latest servers. The Computer Centre is connected to INTERNET through 6 MB lease line.

Design Centre - It has been established under the INDO-UK REC project at Motilal Nehru National Institute Of Technology, Allahabad. This centre conducts R & D and consultancy activities in the area of CAD / CAM, PCB Design, Image Processing and Vision Systems, Robotics, Air Pollution Control and Structural Testing etc. The centre covers a site of about 900 square meter and a built up area of about 1200 square meter in two floors. There are five laboratories, conference hall and other administration and service areas. The Design centre is equipped with 24 no. of Pentium PC/AT's networked together with two servers. The centre has acquired about 20 work stations in medium and high end performance range. The work stations include those from HP, SGI, SUN and Alpha.

Besides these there are other high precision equipment at this centre are :

  • Arrow 750, 4-Axis Vertical Machining Centre.
  • FDM 1650 Rapid Prototyping Machine. LKPF 35 PCB Prototyping Machine.
  • Image Processing System with Digital Signal Processing Capabilities.
  • Air Pollution monitoring system.
  • Damage diagnostic system from crack detection and corrosion measurement.
  • Software's such as AUTOCAD, PROENGINEER, IDEAS etc.

Laboratory Facilities - The college encamps different departments which not only helps in the smooth functioning of the academic activities but also provide the budding technocrats with the expertise guidance and the latest laboratory facilities for their technical upliftment and development of professional traits. Each department provides various lab. facilities for the practical as well as research purpose. Parallel computing laboratory with Param 10000 Super Computer and other nodes is a well equipped laboratory for Parallel Computing and Database applications.

III Cell - The Institute Industry Interaction Cell (III Cell) is equipped with necessary infrastructure facilities which are necessary for R & D projects and liaison with the industries. The Cell establishes contact with the industries for getting industrial projects for undergraduate and post graduate students and also to get R & D project for the faculty members. The main focus is the local industries like BPCL, ITI, TSL, TSL, GEC etc. The III Cell also promotes staff members to visit industries to get first hand technological information and also identify industrial problems which can be handles by the college staff. Similarly college invites engineers and scholars working in industries and institutions for delivering special lecture to students and faculty.

Institute Dispensary
- It is an out patient Dispensary catering the following need of Approximately 3000 students and similar number of staff & their dependants.

Facilities include :

  1. Consultation & Dispensing of medicines to students, staff & their dependants.
  2. Special facilities of E.C.G., sugar testing by Glucometer.
  3. Services of Dental surgeon, Orthopaedic surgeon, Ophthalmic surgeon, Skin specialist, Gynaecologist are available on different days.
  4. Homoeopathic medicines also being provided under consultation of Homoeopathic consultant.
  5. Physiotherapist is also available for all type of physiotherapy.
  6. Organization of different camps and talks for benefit and awareness of mass in diseases like Hepatitis ,AIDS, Asthma, Diabetes and Arthritis.

Gymkhana - Gymkhana is a student governed organization that cultivates leadership, encourages students to participate in outdoor activities, and provide facilities for games and sports. The members of the staff monitor activities of Gymkhana and help the students in organizing and managing their functions. Gymkhana provides facilities fr out-door games like Athletics, Cricket, Foot-ball, Hockey, Badminton, Basket-ball, Base-Ball, Lawn-Tennis, Squash, Gymnastic, Yogic-Exercise, Boxing and Volley-ball etc. Each game is looked after by a captain and an officer in charge. Captain of the game is nominated by the President Gymkhana on recommendation of O.C. President Gymkhana is Principal. All the games are properly run with the assistance of Gymkhana staff. For proper functioning of all the games, Gymkhana Executives meets from time to time and makes necessary rules. Currently, Dr. Sudarshan Tiwari (EI.ED) is the President Gymkhana.

Students Club - The Student's Club provides facilities of indoor games (Table Tennis, Carom, Chess etc.) to all students. Cultural activities like music and drama, hobbies like photography, painting drafting and radio, literary activities like debates seminars etc. are encouraged. A large no. of Newspapers and magazines shops are available.

Student's Club is divided into six main sections:

  • Literary.
  • Cultural, Dramatic and Music.
  • Photography and Painting.
  • Indoor Games.
  • Radio and Hobby.
  • Film.

Each section is looked after by committee of students elected from each hostel under the guidance of staff member, nominated by President. The General Secretary coordinates all the functions of the Club. The work of the Club is supervised by President, Student's Club. He is assisted by one vice president and Officers-in-charge of various activities. Currently, Dr. Rakesh Mathur (A.M.D) is President Student Club.

National Cadet Corps - There is one N.C.C. Co. functioning in the College having two platoons of engineers and one platoon of EME students having N.C.C. background. After passing 'B' and 'C' certificates in N.C.C. they get preference in employment in Defence Departments as well as in private sector, Other things being equal, N.C.C. (Cadets) Candidates who are certificates-holders are given priority. 'C' certificate holder, after getting commission in the Army are given six months seniority on their course marks.The National Service Scheme is aimed at including a sense of national and social responsibility among the students and to make them appreciate the dignity of labour for the welfare of rural and weaker sections of the society. Under N.S.S. they have to participate for 240 hours in regular programmes, serve for two years, and attend one special camp of 10 days duration over a period of two years. After successful completion of the programmes, the students are awarded a certificate which is given due weightage by various Government and private organizations during selection for jobs.

Annual Meets - MNNIT hosts four Major National Level Meets namely:

  • Avishkar - Annual National Level Technical Meet:  It is one of its kind in terms of quality and scale of events.
  • Culrav - Annual Cultural Festival: It showcases the diverse cultural wealth of India through the medium of a wide number of competitions. In other words, it unarguably a celebration of the vibrant spirit of MNNIT.
  • Gnosiomania - Annual National Level Quiz Festival: It's one of the first of such events showcased in the country.
  • Robofest - Robofest - "The Rise of Machines" is a three day national level extravaganza dedicated solely to the field of Robotics. Organised by MNNIT Robotics Club each year, the events receives bountiful participation from the institute as well as from outside. Robotics Club at MNNIT was founded on 7th of November 2004 by robotics enthusiasts. In addition to Robofest and Avishkar, Robotics Club keeps the campus active throughout the year with various projects, theoretical as well as practical demonstrations to new-comers, helping students to participate in reputed robotics competitions etc.

Achievements

  • MNNIT expresses its immense happiness and pride in its Alumni’s Sri Deep Joshi receiving the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award for 2009 for his work on “Development of rural communities”.
  • In surveys by Dataquest magazine (in collaboration with NASSCOM), the institute consistently ranks amongst the top-20 technical schools in India.
