About National Institute of Technology - NIT Raipur

National Institute of Technology, Raipur was established in 1956 as College of Mining & Metallurgy with two engineering disciplines: Mining and Metallurgy. It is one of the oldest Institution of its kind in India with it's foundation stone being laid by Dr. Rajendra Prasad on 14th September 1956. The construction work was completed in 1962 and inauguration was on 14th March 1963 by India's first Prime Minister Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. In 1958-59 with the commencement of additional courses in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering the college came to be known as Government College of Engineering and Technology. In view of its great past with 50 years old record of excellence and several strengths, the Institute was declared as National Institute of Technology (NIT) by the Central Government on 1st Dec. 2005. The Institute has been upgraded to the category of National Institute Technology and has been accorded the status of Deemed University.  It is the nineteenth NIT to be established in India. It offers 12 undergraduate and 6 Postgraduate courses including M.C.A and M.Tech. in Applied Geology. The Institute offers facilities for Ph.D. and also under takes R & D activities, provides testing, consultancy and other extension services including continuing education to the industry through the Industry Institute Interaction cell and the placement of the student through the Department of Training & Placement. The Institute, located in Raipur, the Capital City of Chhattisgarh State, is spared over an area of 100 acres. The Campus is a completely planned entity consisting of the main Institute building, Six Hostel Blocks, Residential Quarters for teaching and non-teaching staff, a Bank, a separate PWD and electricity office for Campus maintenance, a well equipped Dispensary and a well maintained Guest House. The Campus has got an additional facility of a Local Railway Station meant specially for the benefit of the students of nearby areas.

Transportation - Raipur city is well connected with Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Visakhapatnam, Nagpur & Bhubneshwar by regular flights and is on the main Howrah-Mumbai railway line route. The Institute is 5 km from Raipur railway station and 14 km from airport on NH-6, the Great Eastern Road.

Facilities

Hostels - The Institute has 5 Boys and 1 Girls Hostel, within the Campus. The Institute also manages one additional Girl's Hostel adjacent to Campus. A 60-seat Girl's Hostel is under construction adjacent to existing Girls Hostel within the campus. A plan for construction of a new Hostel Block for Boys is under process. Each Hostel is self-contained with amenities such as common room and a dining hall with mess. All the Hostel Rooms are adequately furnished. Each Hostel has a capacity to house about 100 inmate students. Each Hostel has different students working committees, mess committee, magazine committee, games committee, cleanliness committee etc. Each committee is responsible for specific aspects of hostel affairs. Two Hostel blocks of 100 seat each, for the Boys will be available for the first semester students and will be allotted on the basis of the merit. Lists for Hostel admission will be declared after receiving the Hostel admission forms by the Hostel administration.

Laboratories - All Departments have their own separate Laboratories. There are about 85 Laboratories over an area of 11510 sq.m.

Reservation - NIT Raipur follows the reservation policy declared by the Supreme Court of India, by which 27% of seats are reserved for Other Backward Classes (OBCs), 15% for Scheduled Castes (SCs), and 7.5% for Scheduled Tribes (STs).

Lecture Halls - There are 35 Lecture Halls extending over an area of 6675 sq.m.

Drawing Halls/Studios - There are 13 Drawing Halls/Studios extending over an area of 3510 sq.m.

Alumni - AAGECNIT provides a forum to establish a link between the Alumni, staff and students of the Institute, to enable the Alumni to participate in activities that will contribute to general development of the Institute etc.

Training and Placement - Department of Training and Placement nurtures Student-Corporate Interaction, by the means of frequent industrial visits, practical and effective training and projects of industrial relevance for the students, with the intention to cease down the hiatus that exists between an industry and the classroom. It also organizes and coordinates Campus Placement Program, to fulfil its commitment of ‘job to every aspirant’ and a proper arrangement for Summer Practical Training for all pre-final year B.Tech. Students are other important function of the Department. Many industries, such as those of cement, steel, steel alloy, mines etc., are located in the vicinity of the Institute giving it a unique advantage for industry-institute interaction in various disciplines of engineering.
