Geography is the study of the Earth and its lands, features, inhabitants and phenomena. It includes study of factors such as physical features, climate, soil, vegetation, population, land use and industries all over world and their regional differentiation. A person who specialises in the study of Geography is called Geographer. Geography is also a field of science which is dependent on other fields of science as well as contributor to other sciences

The study of geography is divided broadly into two main branches -

1. Human geography - It's area of study includes the built environment and how space is created, viewed and managed by humans as well as the influence humans have on the space they occupy.

2. Physical geography - It's area of study includes the natural environment, climate, vegetation & life, soil, water and landforms and their interaction with each other

    Job Perspectives

    Geography as a career option provides multiple options to the young aspirants who have keen interest in different phenomena of the earth. Depending on their area of specialization, geographers may be employed as forest managers, agricultural specialists, cartographers, regional and urban planners, GIS and remote sensing specialists, demographers etc. in government and research organizations. Geographers can also join NGOs and other developmental agencies engaged in population studies, rural development and environmental issues. Teaching in schools/collages/universities is also a good option for geographers. They can also start their own coaching institutes.

    A geography background is also an asset for careers in travel and tourism, particularly for travel Journalism. Geography also helps in competitive examinations and general knowledge papers. In the age of satellite technology and GIS, multiple career options are waiting for qualified and able geographer. With the increase use of satellite technology and Geographical Information System in almost every sphere of life, Geography is becoming a more promising career option than it was ever before
