M.Ch. Surgical Oncology or Master of Chirurgiae in Surgical Oncology is a postgraduate Surgery programme. This is a branch of surgery which focuses on the surgical management of cancer. Surgery is the oldest known treatment for cancer. If cancer has not metastasized, it is possible to completely cure a patient by surgically removing cancer from the body. Surgery remains the best modality, either by itself or in combination with adjuvant treatments in solid tumours. The duration of the course one year and after passing there are many scopes for candidates in various fields. The course comprises in three parts such as- Basic principals in Oncology; a Clinical practice of Surgical Oncology and Recent Advances in Oncology.
Candidates, who have completed their M.Ch. in Surgical Oncology, are called as Surgical Oncologist and they offer the most comprehensive and sophisticated care to cancer patients due to the training offered to them during the course period. Since they have learnt all aspects of cancer care, they base their recommendations on the latest development in radiation, chemotherapy and surgery. They maintain a close association with radiation oncologists and medical oncologists to review the plans for offering care to a patient suffering from cancer. They work with these professionals to offer the best surgical treatment to enable the patients to get out of their cancer.
