M.Tech. Petroleum Geology or Master of Technology in Petroleum Geology is a postgraduate Petroleum Engineering course. Petroleum geology is the study of the origin, occurrence, movement, accumulation, and exploration of hydrocarbon fuels. It refers to the specific set of geological disciplines that are applied to the search for hydrocarbons (oil exploration). Petroleum geology is principally concerned with the evaluation of seven key elements in sedimentary basins: Source, reservoir, seal, trap, timing, maturation and migration. The duration of the course is two years and it offers many careers after its successful completion.

M.Tech. Petroleum Geology Eligibility

  • The students should have passed a B.E./B.Tech. or equivalent degree with a minimum of 50% marks or equivalent CGPA.
  • Some of the very renowned universities and colleges conduct an entrance examination for admission.

M.Tech. Petroleum Geology Course Suitability

  • It is suitable to know how to read the story told by the very earth beneath our feet in order to find oil and natural gas, which are vital resources in our lives.
  • The course helps to develop the knowledge needed to communicate with and work alongside specialists in the other engineering and scientific disciplines involved in hydrocarbon exploration and production, in small, multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Those who wish to obtain a higher qualification, specialize in an area of petroleum geology and/or geophysics, convert from another area of geosciences, perform applied research in petroleum geosciences also can go for it.

How is M.Tech. Petroleum Geology Course Beneficial?

  • It helps to evaluate and solve technical problems related to the exploration and production of hydrocarbon reservoirs, from regional to reservoir scale, by interpreting and integrating different types of geological, geophysical and engineering data.
  • They have also a popular choice for Civil Services and Forest Service Examinations conducted by the UPSC.
  • After passing the course and clearing the UGC-NET exam they can become a permanent lecturer in colleges and universities.
  • Petroleum Geologist work includes exploration and production of oil and natural gas. Some geologists also study ecology to incorporate protection of the environment in their work.
