Petroleum Engineering is that Engineering which is concerned with the subsurface activities related to the production of hydrocarbons, which can be either crude oil or natural gas. Petroleum Engineering courses in India are a great way to kick start ones career especially those who are interested in aspects related to petroleum. Petroleum Engineering, in other words, is the discipline in which the principles of Geology, Physics and Engineering are applied for the recovery, development and processing of petroleum. Petroleum finds application in plastics, paints, polymers, soaps, medicines, transportation, cooking food in the form of LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) or kerosene. The different components of petroleum are petrol, diesel, kerosene, LPG, gasoline, pitch or bitumen, bunker oil, aviation turbine fuel, asphalt, CNG (Compressed Natural Gas), mineral oil, petroleum jelly and lubricants. The process of development and processing is divided into Upstream Sector and Downstream Sector. Oil and Gas Industry, which are the activities of finding and producing hydrocarbons comes under Upstream Sector. Refining and Distribution to a market comes under Downstream Sector. Exploration, by earth scientists and petroleum engineering are the oil and gas industry's two main subsurface disciplines, which focus on maximizing economic recovery of hydrocarbons from subsurface reservoirs.

  • Petroleum geology and geophysics focus on provision of a static description of the hydrocarbon reservoir rock, while petroleum engineering focuses on estimation of the recoverable volume of this resource using a detailed understanding of the physical behaviour of oil, water and gas within porous rock at very high pressure. Petroleum engineering requires a good knowledge of many other related disciplines, such as geophysics, petroleum geology, formation evaluation (well logging), drilling, economics, reservoir simulation, well engineering, artificial lift systems and oil & gas facilities engineering. The combined efforts of geologists and petroleum engineers throughout the life of a hydrocarbon accumulation determine the way in which a reservoir is developed and depleted, and usually they have the highest impact on field economics. Petroleum engineers in each stage of oil field evaluation, development and production of hydrocarbons. A Petroleum Engineer usually works in a team comprising professionals drawn from different disciplines. A Petroleum Engineer has to work with geophysicists, geologists, well log analysts, safety engineers, environmental / regulatory specialists etc.

    Basic Requirements

    Basic qualification is 10+2 examination with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as subjects to pursue aBachelor’s course in Petroleum Engineering. One should have completed B.Tech (Bachelor of Technology) or B.E. (Bachelor of Engineering) in chemical or petroleum engineering in order to pursue an M.Tech (Master of Technology) degree in Petroleum Engineering. One who has completed an M.Sc. course in Chemistry is also eligible to pursue a M.E course in Petroleum Engineering.
