Telecom Courses in India is the widely used term for ‘Telecommunication Engineering Courses in India’. Telecom courses have advanced with technological leaps in the telecom industry aided by the entertainment and business industry. For those who want to confirm their knowledge about Telecom then, it refers to systems used in transmitting messages over a distance electronically. In a more detailed manner, Telecommunications engineering is the science of designing, implementing, managing hardware, software and systems of telecommunications for transmitting the information. It is a major field within Electronic Engineering. Telecommunication Engineering includes mobile phones, cable TV, computer networking, TV radar, navigation and satellites. Telecommunication Engineers deal with line and wireless communication or radio communication. Their work comprises the installation, supervision, and maintenance of telephone exchanges and telephone lines. In Modern World important towns, cities, trade centres, harbours and ports are connected with underground cables or radio links. Similarly, countries and continents are connected by means of fast-emanating, information-carrying communication networks. There are two main segments in Indian Telecommunication sector, i.e. - Fixed Service Provider (FSPs) and Cellular Services. The sectors focus is now more oriented towards new emerging technologies like 3G and 4G, apart from improving services like GSM, CDMA, WLL etc. The Indian telecommunications industry is one of the fastest-growing in the world.  According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the number of telephone subscriber base in the country reached 742.12 million as on October 31, 2010. According to a report published by Gartner Inc in June 2009, the total mobile services revenue in India is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.5 per cent from 2009-2013 to exceed US$ 30 billion. No wonder then, that a career in telecom is as good as it had never been.

    Telecommunication Engineering Course: Basic Requirements

For graduation course in Telecommunication, Engineering one must pass the Higher Secondary or 10+2 examination with physics, chemistry and mathematics as compulsory subjects to become eligible for various entrance tests like the IIT Joint Entrance Examinations conducted at the national or state level.

For acquiring a post-graduation degree a student must have a B. Tech. degree in telecommunication from an A.I.C.T.E. (All India Council of Technical Education) approved University.

Apart from the above two options, there are two examinations for becoming recognised engineers - Associate Membership of Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (AMIETE) and Diploma level Program of Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (DIPIETE).

A candidate applying for DIPIETE program should at least 14-year-old. He/she should also be minimum pass in 10th board examination of any school board and have working experience in the relevant field or studying for a higher qualification with Physics / Mathematics / Engineering / Computer Science. The DIPIETE certificate is recognized by the government as any other diploma of engineering.

    Career & Job Perspectives

There is a huge demand for telecommunication engineers in this age of satellites, internet and mobile telephony. As the systems are fairly new, there are various technical glitches which need to be sorted out. For providing solutions to such glitches engineers are in huge demand by the Broadcasting sector, electronics and Mass communication sector, government and manufacturing sector. Telecom engineer jobs are available in broader areas such as electronic engineering, instrumentation engineering, computer engineering, systems analysis and control engineering. Graduates may also find employment in other areas of ICT (information and communication technology). Telecommunication engineers are also employed by the Ministry of Communication, AIR, DD, and information and broadcasting sectors, railways, police, BSF, CRPF and defence related organizations. They are also employed by private companies manufacturing radio equipment and electronics. Telecom jobs in India are abundant in various telecom companies, top ones are mentioned below.
