Environmental Engineering is a field of Engineering which utilises the knowledge of science and engineering principles to safeguard and improve the environment (air, water, and/or land resources). Environmental Engineering in India is of great significance as there is a great need to provide healthy water, air, and land for habitation of both Humans and for other organisms. With increased use of chemicals in industry and agricultural, the environment has become severely polluted. Earlier water treatment, supply of potable water, disposal of human excreta, design of septic tanks, sewerage systems used to be the only focus of environmental engineering. But now the field has widened considerably including air pollution, nuclear pollution, oil pollution, noise pollution, chemical contamination etc. A Professional in this field is known as Environmental Engineer. They are concerned with local and worldwide environmental issues. They study and attempt to minimize the effects of acid rain, global warming, automobile emissions, and ozone depletion. They are also are involved in the protection of wildlife.
