Naturopathy courses in India were available only in few select areas of India and they were not as popular as we see them today (reference to year 2012). Very few students would take a course in naturopathy as the market was dominant with allopathic mode of treatment. However, there were many people who were not satisfied with such treatment and they turned to the traditional methods of treatment. Here, it is important to know that naturopathy courses academic wise were not popular but Indian families had been practicing naturopathy in their daily lives. Perhaps that could be one more reason why these were not important academically as everybody knew it. It is also possible that we tend to take things for granted when we have them. The only thing that was not present was that the education was not institutionalised as was the practice in Canada and United States. Here the system had already established its roots in an institutional manner with regulating bodies and associations.

In India naturopathy education comes under the purview of Ministry of Health & Family Welfare but there are more unregulated private institutes imparting naturopathy education than regulated ones. Their sheer number makes maintaining their record unmanageable. That has not affected the popularity of its treatments which are non evasive and require no medicines. In other words, it is more skill and practice based field than theoretic one. Allopathic and Homeopathic groups do not consider these as medicinal systems and try to diminish their popularity through their nexus with government agencies and private association. These can be accounted for as major reasons for their non-regulation. Keeping aside these impediments Naturopathy has established a good ground hold especially in southern India and is here to stay.
