Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), Burla is a State Government University specialising in engineering education. Before becoming a University it was a College named - University College of Engineering (UCE) established on 12th August 1956 at Burla. It was functioning as a constituent college of Utkal University, Bhubaneswar. The college had been specifically established to produce engineers who could manage Hirakud Dam located nearby. UCE became a University by Orissa Act 9 of 2009 by converting University College of Engineering (UCE), Burla to a non-affiliating Unitary University. The act was implemented by an issue of notification by the Industries Department, Government of Odisha from 1st day of July 2009. VSSUT, Burla is named after Veer Surendra Sai, the great Indian freedom fighter who was born on 23rd January 1809. He sacrificed his life fighting against the British and died in obscurity in Asirgarh Jail on 28th February 1884. The University is empowered to award degrees as specified by the UGC under section 22 of the UGC Act. It follows semester system for both Undergraduate and Post graduate programmes. The medium of instruction and teaching is English. The University has obtained Institutional membership (IM-223) from the Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE). The University has got a chapter of ISTE in which many teachers have enrolled themselves. The University occupies nearly 300 acres of prime land in Burla. VSSUT has workshops, conference hall, recreational amenities and other utility services available for the students in the campus.
Location
VSSUT is situated at the foothill of world famous Hirakud dam. Burla is located at 21°30′N 83°52′E21.5°N 83.87°E. The town lies at one end of Hirakud Dam which is located around 2 km north-west of the town.

Facilities at VSSUT
Hostels – The University has separate hostel facilities for boys and girls. The hostels provide all the basic amenities to the students. There are 10 hostels and are named as - Marichi Hall of Residence, Atri Hall of Residence, Kratu Hall of Residence, Arundhati Hall of Residence, Anuradha Hall of Residence, Vasistha Hall of Residence, Visakha Hall of Residence, Angira Hall of Residence, Pulastya Hall of Residence, Rohini Hall of Residence and Pulaha Hall of Residence.
Library - The University Library is the largest technical library of the State. It has a separate building with 3 stories, one having area of 10,900 sq. ft. The different floors of the library house different sections. The ground floor is used for the Circulation Section and the General book Bank. The first floor houses the Journal Section, Reference Section, Reprographic Section and the Administrative Section of the Library. The top floor is used for Text Book Section. There is a reading hall with capacity for 100 students in this floor. A portion of this floor is used for housing the SC/ST Book Bank. The Library remains open from 10 AM to 8PM on all working days of the week except in the hot summer months (April & May) during which there is a break from 1 PM to 2.30 PM.
The library has a collection of more than 70,000 volumes including Photostat and microfilms. About 70% of the total collection is of Engineering disciplines and balance 30% is of Science, Humanities and General reference type. The library has one microfilm reader for reading microfilms. It is a member of Indian National Digital Library in Engineering Science and Technology with financial support provided by the All India Council of Technical Education. As such online access to the journals of ASCE, ASME and IEL is available to all the members of the Library. Further under the auspices of the INDEST the students have access to JET (J-Gate Engineering and Technology).
Scholarships – Various scholarship and awards are offered by various agencies through the University.
Some of these are:
NCC - N.C.C. is compulsory at the 1st year level and offered for the benefit of the students as it builds their character, leadership, officer like qualities and helps them in selection for defence services. NCC aims at exacting a force of disciplined and trained manpower to help the country in a national emergency.
NSS – It tries to include a sense of national and social responsibility among the students Under N.S.S., the members have to participate for 240 hours in regular programmes, service for two years, and attend one special camp of 10 days duration over a period of two years. After successful completion of the programme, the students are awarded a certificate which is given due weight age by various Government and private organizations.
Central Research Facility – The facility contains HITACHI make SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) SU3500 model with OXFORD EDAX facility. This is attached with OXFORD INCAX act model make Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). These are used by students, research scholars, faculties for teaching, research as well as consultancy work.
Central Computer Facility - The Central Computer Facility of the University is equipped with servers and a number of nodes and PCs. The facility remains open from 8.00 am to 8.00p.m. on all working days of the University.
Internet - Internet with e-mail and browser facility has been provided to the students.
Central Transport Facilities - The University provides central transport facilities to both students and staff. It has 2 buses, 1 mini bus, 3 Ambassador cars and 1 Jeep. The buses are used for industrial tour of the students. Mini bus is used for local tour of the students for attending the athletic meet at a distant place in this region. Cars and Jeeps are used for various official work.
