About Siksha 'O' Anusandhan (Deemed to be University)

Siksha O Anusandhan (SOA), Bhubaneswar, Orissa was established by the Siksha "O" Anusandhan Charitable Trust registered under the Trust Act 1982. Siksha O Anusandhan University was initially established as an Engineering Institute in Bhubaneswar by Prof. (Dr.) Manojranjan Nayak, an educationalist and a humanist who envisioned the need of contemporary branches of professional education and research in 1995. The lack of facilities for pursuing careers in technical fields in Orissa fuelled his vision. The Institute was named - Institute of Technical Education & Research or more popularly as ITER. Siksha O Anusandhan University, which was previously recognized as an educational society under societies registration Act. XXI of 1860, acquired the status of University U/S of the U.G.C. Act. 1956 w.e.f. the academic session 2007-2008. In recognition of the contribution to technical and professional education, the University Grant Commission declared SOA as a University U/S 3 of UGC Act 1956 in 2007. The Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, declared Siksha O Anusandhan deemed to be a university on 17 July 2007. The University Main campus is spread over 112 acres and the Satellite campus is spread over 37.5 acres. Each university school has its own campus that blends environment friendly architecture and greenery. The university offers a variety of programs which are available with Annual System, Semester I Trimester and Choice Based Credit System. Majority of the programmes offered by the University are either accredited or approved by NBA, AICTE, MCI, DCI, PCI and INC.

Location - SOA university is strategically located in the city, accessible within minutes from the Railway Station, Airport, State Secretariat.

Facilities

Library - Most of the departments in SOA university, Orissa, have their own libraries. The total combined collection of all the department books is about 1,24881. Various journals have been subscribed by the respective libraries. It has both print and e- resources through INFLIBNET/ DELNET/EBSCO. The Library is automated and kept open from 8.30 a.m. to 11.00 p.m. Book Bank facility is also available (23,432 books).

Hostels - Separate hostel facility is available for girls and boys along with Residential quarters for staff.

Laboratories
- All the constituent institutes of the university have their own separate laboratories which total up to 141 in number.

Sports and Other Facilities - University provides good facilities for sports and cultural activities. Students are provided with various forums to exhibit their talents. Various clubs like Robotics club, Photographic club, Music club, Dance club, Quiz club, Painting (Srishti) cater to creative activities of the students. Social welfare initiatives in plantation of trees, blood donation camp, and relief during natural calamities are also conducted through NCC and NSS.

Evening Course - ITER provides evening courses for 1st Year, 2nd Year & 3rd Year students in the following 1st year Subjects:

  • CY101 - Chemistry.
  • PH101 - Physics.
  • EE101 - Introduction to Electrical Engineering.
  • EC101 - Introduction to Electronics.

Research and Development Programmes for National relevance - SOA University is heading towards handling few projects of national importance in these following areas.

  • Urban Flood Mitigation.

  • Resource Exploration.

Placement Cell - It identifies the industry needs and demands from time to time and prepares its graduating engineering and M.C.A. students. Students' communication skills are honed through communication and organizational behaviour courses. For overall personality development regular counselling sessions are organized on various aspects like positive thinking, body language, time management, stress management and communicative skills through various activities like Group Discussions, Personal interviews, Industry Readiness Tests, Psychometric Tests, Dummy seminars and talk etc. Psychologists and career counsellors conduct these sessions, motivate the students and help them to improve the power of assimilation and retention. Off-campus recruitment programmes are organised to facilitate the students of other technical Institute of the State to learn and improvise them.     
Scheme of Research Assistantships - The scheme envisages providing financial assistance of Rs. 15,000/- to the candidates recruited under this scheme and encourage them to earn their Ph.D. degree at SOA University within 24 months. In lieu of the research fellowship the candidate will be given a teaching / lab load equivalent to 9 hours per week.

The amount of Research Assistantship would be as follows:

1.  Post-Graduates in Engineering, Technology & Management (consolidated):- Rs.15,000/- per month (consolidated).

2.  Graduates in Engineering & Technology and Post-Graduates in Science, Computer Applications and Commerce (M.Sc., M.C.A and M.Com.) - Rs.10,000/- per month (consolidated).

The duration of the award would be as follows:

1.  Post-Graduates in Engineering, Technology & Management and M.Phil. degree holders registered for Ph.D. degree: Three Years.

2.  Post-Graduates in sciences registered for Ph.D. degree: Three Years.

The awardees would be governed by the service rules of SOA University, the regulations for research conferment at SOA University and specific conditions of the Assistantships.

Health Care - All Students are provided with free health care facility.

Classrooms - Many of  the classes are equipped with LCD projectors and internet access through Wi-Fi network.

Computer Facility
- Central computing facilities are available for students, faculty and researchers.

LAN network - The entire University is connected by LAN.

Academic Partnership - The university has signed MOU with IMMT(CSIR), Infosys for Campus Connect Programme (CCP), WIPRO for Mission 10X, Hexaware for Centre for Excellence and Mind Tree for Gyanbrukshya as trusted academic partners

Industry-Institute interaction - It is achieved through seminars, guest lectures, study tours, consultancy and projects.
