What is a Job cover letter?

Job cover letter is a Letter of Introduction attached to, or accompanying another document such as a résumé or curriculum vitae. Because of its increased usage with Resume’s it is also referred as Resume Cover Page. Covering Letter is another befitting term as it actually covers the letter. Its other names include motivation letter, motivational letter or a letter of motivation. It is an Official Letter attached to along with folio or any other application documents that are sent to a prospective employer. Job cover letters are essential for employing companies as it predetermines the suitability of the candidate for the job applied for. The language and its tone provide the employers an initial or preliminary indication of the potential of a candidate.

What is a Job cover letter for?

While many of us might not consider attaching a covering letter with a resume because of the extra effort. But this small piece of paper can do tricks for you if used in a way intended to.
A job cover letter is somewhat of an Appetizer before a meal, whereas it arouses hunger for a Diner; it arouses interest in an Employer. Job cover letter can leave a good impression if written well and may put you in good eyes even before one has read the accompanying CV. Your job cover letter can also become your short route for a job interview. And if you have written it in an incorrect manner, your resume may become as good as a trash. So, it makes good sense to give the necessary time and effort for writing effective job cover letters.

Basically, there are 3 Types of Job cover letters:

  1. Job Application Letter - Application Letter is written to respond to a known job opening
  2. Prospecting Letter - As the term goes Prospecting Letter inquires about possible positions. Also termed as ‘Inquiry Letters’
  3. Networking Letter - Networking Letter requests information and assistance in your job search.
