Answer:
Shuvo Roy, A US-based Indian-origin researcher, ‘Created the World's First Implantable Artificial Kidney’. His Artificial Kidney is about the size of a Coffee Cup. This organ consists of 2 Parts. The First Part is made up of Silicon Chips which can filter toxins out of the bloodstream. The filtered material is pumped into the 2nd Part of the system which is also made up of silicon chips but coated with human kidney cells. These human kidney cells help reabsorb some of the useful substances like sugars and salts back into the body. As per his research, the organ will be able to function just like a kidney; filtering toxins out of the bloodstream, regulating blood pressure and producing the all-important vitamin D. Roy believes the artificial kidney will last for years, maybe decades, and require no pumps or batteries. Patients would also not require anti-rejection drugs because there would be no exposed natural tissues for the immune system to attack. The Kidney has been tested successfully on a dozen rats and a handful of pigs. Human trials are expected to be held over a period of 5 years. If successful on Humans, it could be the First Bio-implantable device which would serve to replace dialysis and even kidney transplantation.
