About Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology - SLIET

The institute was established by Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD), Govt. of India in the year 1989 and was formally inaugurated on 20th  December 1991. The institute is a humble tribute to the everlasting memory of the revered Saint (saint), Sant Harchand Singh Longowal, the inventor of the long underwear worn by Sikh men. The institute is an autonomous body, fully funded by Ministry of Human Resources & Development, Government of India and controlled by SLIET (Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering & Technology) society, registered under Societies Registration Act, 1860. The institute awards its own certificates and Diplomas approved and recognized by AICTE, New Delhi. Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses are affiliated to Punjab Technical University (PTU), Jalandhar. Ph.D. programmes have also been started in collaboration with PTU and other neighbouring Universities. The institute has a sprawling area of 451 acres of land provided by Punjab Government. Surrounded by lush green land, the campus of the institute extends a beautiful and well developed area. Deemed to be University in 2006. The educational programmes of this institute are non-conventional, innovative, practical oriented and contain all aspects of new education policy (1986) of Govt. of India. The Institute offers programmes at Certificate, Diploma, Degree, Postgraduate (M.Tech. and MBA) levels in various branches of Engineering and Technology and Ph.D. programmes in Science, Technology and Engineering. The programmes in the Institute provide direct entry at Certificate, Diploma, Degree, M.Tech. and MBA levels and vertical mobility at Diploma and Degree levels of education, besides non-formal education programmes. The Institute has acquired the status of a Deemed-to- be-University in the year 2007 (Notification No.F.9-42/2001-U.3).

Location
  - The Institute is situated at Longowal (about 8 km from Badbar on Chandigarh-Bathinda Highway) in the District of Sangrur, Punjab.

Transportation

  • It is connected by road with Sangrur (18 km), Ludhiana (100 km), Chandigarh (150 km) and Delhi (360 km).
  • The nearest railway stations are Sangrur (18 km), Dhuri (30 km) & Sunam (16 km) on the Northern Railway.
  • The nearest airports are at Chandigarh and Bathinda.

Facilities

Hostels - SLIET is a residential campus with eight hostels for boys and two for girls accommodating about 2500 which includes about 400 girl students. The hostels have been provided with modern kitchens, comfortable dinning halls and indoor games facilities. Internet connectivity, Newspapers, Magazines and Cable T.V. facilities are also available in all the hostels. Two more boys hostels and one girls hostel is under construction. Hostel facility shall be provided only, if available. Hostel facility is not available for the PG students (Boys) to be admitted during the Academic Session 2010-11.

Central Library - The Library is housed in a modern building having all kinds of facilities for its best utilization by the faculty, staff and students. It has large number of volumes of technical books along with a good collection of books on literature, general awareness, management, social sciences and humanities. The central library is subscribing numerous National/International periodicals and magazines for the benefit of its users. Besides these journals, the central library is a member of INDEST Consortium. Through INDEST, the faculty, staff and students of the institute have access to full text journals from IEEE, Springer, Science Direct, ASME, ASCE, ACM, NATURE etc. The library users also have access to DELNET database and JCCC.

Computing Facilities - The Institute is equipped with latest and powerful hardware and software systems. The computer laboratories provide opportunity to students and faculty to work on LINUX and Windows platforms. The institute provides exposure to high-end database packages such as Oracle, Sybase, DB2 and front end tool such as Power Builder & Developer 2000, Visual J++, Visual Basic etc. More than 1200 nodes spreading over different academic blocks, hostels and other buildings are interconnected through campus wide network.

Internet -  The institute has dedicated 16 Mbps lease line internet connectivity for the benefit of the students and faculty. Internet facility has been extended to various academic blocks, hostels and other buildings through campus wide networking.

Non-Formal Educational Programmes - One of the major objectives of the Institute is to provide Non Formal Vocational and Technical Education to the people of all parts of country. Such endeavours will provide semi-skilled/skilled workers, which, in turn, will result in development and urbanization of the villages.

Keeping this in mind, the following Non Formal Vocational & Technical Education Programmes have been started in the Institute:

1. Centre for Punjab Youth Training & Employment (C-PYTE) - Established in SLIET under the Scheme of Ministry of Youth Welfare & Sports, Govt. of Punjab in 1991-92 with the following objectives:

  • To give 6 months non-formal training to unemployed youth of Punjab especially border areas.
  • To encourage youth not to indulge into anti-social activities.
  • To bring youth in national mainstream.

Six Programmes

  1. Wood working &furniture making.
  2. Plumbing.
  3. Home Wiring & repair of House hold electrical appliances.
  4. Welding & fabrication.
  5. Audio &Video Service Technician.
  6. Refrigeration & Air conditioning.

2. Scheme for Persons with Disabilities - SLIET has been identified by MHRD, New Delhi (Govt. of India) amongst 50 institutions in all for imparting Integrated Vocational and technical Education to Persons With Disabilities.

Salient features of the scheme are:

  • To impart vocational and Technical Education to Persons With Disabilities.
  • Seats reserved for PWD for admission to formal courses (Certificate/Diploma).
  • Scholarship worth Rs. 250/-(p.m.) + T.A. Rs. 200/-(p.m.) for Day Scholars + Free boarding (Rs. 1000/- p.m. for Hostellers) +Books and uniform allowances (Rs. 3000/- per year).
  • Specialized non-formal programmes in various streams for PWDs with scholarship and other allowances.
  • Admission to PWDs are given in the appropriate courses at Certificate, Diploma & Degree levels.

3. HUDCO Building Centre Scheme - Under the scheme of HUDCO, Govt. of India, SLIET has established a building centre in the campus since March, 2000.

Objectives:

  1. Scheme sponsored by MHRD, Govt of India.
  2. Technology Transfer to rural sector for their development : smokeless chulha, solar dryer, biogas plant etc.
  3. Vocational training to unemployed youth for self employment.
  4. Many extension centres at various villages at Punjab State have been established.
  5. Technical services like repair of pumps, fans etc and welding repair of farming equipments.
  6. Conducting entrepreneurship/self employment awareness camps.
  7. More than 2500 candidates have been trained under the scheme.

4. Community Development Scheme - It is a scheme sponsored by MHRD, Govt of India and provides Technology Transfer to rural sector for their development : smokeless chulha, solar dryer, biogas plant, vocational training to unemployed youth for self employment, many extension centres at various villages at Punjab State have been established, technical services like repair of pumps, fans etc and welding repair of farming equipments,conducting entrepreneurship/self employment awareness camps etc.

SLIET Model School - SLIET Model School has been established at the institute to cater the educational needs of the children of the employees and people of nearby areas. Facilities of play room, internet lab.,music room, library and facilities for sports including swings, skating rink, open air stage and splash pool exist. Classroom activities, excursions, dance, drama,music, painting and other co curricular activities to channelize their energies for self-actualization are regularly organized.

Reservation of Seats - The extent of reservation will be as under:

  • For Scheduled Caste (S.C.) 15%
  • For Scheduled Tribes (S.T.) 7.5%
  • For Physically Handicapped (PH) 3%
  • For Other Backward Classes (OBC) 27%
  • (OBC reservation will be available to non-creamy layer only. The details of non- creamy layer will be as per the stipulations set out.

Research And Development - Research work is undertaken by the faculty of the institute in the interdisciplinary areas to provide preventive and productive solutions for the problems of industry and community as a whole. Organizations like MHRD, AICTE, DST, CSIR & ICAR have funded various research projects in the specialized fields of science and technology. R&D activities will get further boost by the accords with CII FICCI, SIDBI and Sangrur District Industrial Chamber (SDIC). Research activities are progressing along a well chalked out vision, which envisages among other initiatives:

Territorial Quota - Seats meant for certificate and diploma courses are bifurcated for the candidates of the State of Punjab and for the candidates belonging to other States, respectively in the following proportion:

I) Certificate Programme

  • Quota for Punjab State (excluding Chandigarh) 75%.
  • Quota for Other States and U.T. (including Chandigarh) 25%.

II) Diploma Programme

  • Quota for Punjab State (excluding Chandigarh) 50%.
  • Quota for Other States and U.T. (including Chandigarh) 50%.

R & D Projects - Some of these are:

Health Centre - The Institute has its own Health Centre to provide necessary medical aid to the students and staff in the campus. Apart from the Medical Officers, specialists are also invited to the health centre for providing consultation to the residents. Ambulance facility is also available to shift the serious patients to the nearby hospitals.

Bank, Post Office, Telephone Exchange and Shopping Centre - A branch of Central Bank of India and a post office are functioning in the campus to cater the needs of the faculty, staff and the students. STD payphone and cyber café facilities are available in the campus. A 500 line EPABX internal telephone facility is available in the institute which is being upgraded further. Each hostel has been provided with a telephone facility. A moderate shopping centre has been set-up to cater to the needs of the residents. All major players of mobile companies have established their network around the campus.

Sports - Adequate provisions for extra-curricular activities are made in the institute. At present, facilities are available for Table Tennis, Badminton, Swimming, Volley-Ball, Football, Hockey, Cricket, Basketball, Lawn Tennis and other indoor games. 400 meters Athletic Track is also available.

Workshops - SLIET provides practical training to the students of all branches. It also provides practical training and experience to the students under 'Non-formal' Programmes. Manufacture and repairing of institute's furniture is also done in the workshops. It also conduct short orientation programmes for skill development of faculty and staff. Workshops in SLIET has got Milling machines, Shaping Machines, Planner, Driller Machine, 3D Spark Erosion EDM etc.

SAC - A modern Students Activity Centre (SAC) which has 2 Squash courts, well equipped Gymnasium, other indoor games (Table Tennis, Chess & Carom) facilities, etc. is fully functional.

Extra Curricular Activities
- Students are encouraged to participate in extra curricular activities. Music and Hobbies clubs are functioning very effectively. Literary society is organizing various literary activities from time to time. Almost all the departments have their own technical societies which organize technical seminars, quizzes and other competitions in the departments to give a thrust to the development of academic potential of the students. NSS & NCC units have also been rendering valuable service by inculcating the habits of social & national responsibilities among the students. The NSS unit also organizes the Blood Donation camps at SLIET Health Centre. ISTE-SLIET Students Chapter organizes a number of events on various aspects of personality and skill development and other areas of student’s interest. There are many Professional Bodies/Societies being run in the Institute with active collaboration of the faculty and students. The societies organize various events time to time for the active participation of the students. Some of these are Indian Physics Association, Punjab Science Congress, Material Research Society of India etc.

Curriculum Development Cell - The Institute has its own Curriculum Development Cell and Resource Centre for production of teaching aids and systemic development of curriculum to suit the requirements of industry.

Equal Opportunities Cell - The equal opportunities cell has been established in the institute to oversee the effective implementation of policies and programmes for disadvantage group (SC’s, ST’s, OBC’s (non-creamy layer), minorities), in order to enhance their employability and success and to provide the guidance and counselling with respect to academic, financial, social and other matters. It also enhances the diversity within the campus.

Eco-awareness, Environment friendly energy conservation group - Environment pollution has become a challenge to the whole world. Scarcity of energy resources is also well known problem of the society. To sensitize the SLIET family & people in the nearby surroundings regarding ecological balance & energy saving, this group focuses on:

  1. To keep the campus clean,green and beautiful.
  2. To generate awareness for optimum utilization and saving fuels.
  3. To develop bicycle culture in the campus.
  4. To develop & preserve a natural sanctuary for birds &animals.
  5. To plant and preserve a botanical garden with useful and medicinal plants.
  6. To make impacts of the campus environment on surrounding areas.

Training and Placement Cell - Institute has a strong Training & Placement Cell with its wings spread over almost all the industrial hubs of India. Some of the important industries that visited SLIET for campus placement are TCS, L&T, Wipro Tech., Nestle, Pepsico, NEC-HCL Technologies, Birlasoft, ITC, Hindustan Lever, Syntel, Torry Herris, Tata Chemicals, Godrej, Reliance, ISGEC, Hexaware Technologies, Punjllyod Ltd., Abhishek Industries, J.P.Cement, Max India Ltd., A.P. Solvex, etc. Efforts have been accelerated to attract more number of industries and organizations for campus placement. The foremost task has been to enlighten the academic atmosphere of this prestigious centrally funded Deemed-to-be-University. All efforts in this direction is resulting into the enhanced placement of our students.

Industry-Institute Interaction - Under Community Development Programmes the institutes has opened three training centres in the rural areas. Under this MHRD and CDC scheme sanctioned to the institute, many short term courses have been started in the nearby villages. The efforts are initiated for HUDCO Building Centre, STEP, UNDP, NABARD training programmes etc in our institute. These programmes lay emphasis on the development of technical and vocational skills. Under social welfare scheme, the institute provides appropriate knowledge in the field, with emphasis on training part of the students of C-PYTE programme of Govt. of Punjab.  Consistent consultancy by the institute to the industry, not only keeps the two in closed proximity but also helps to strengthen the R & D programmes of the institute. Some of the R & D programmes have been adopted by faculty for their Ph.D. work. Several MoU with various industrial houses of national and international fame have been signed for the purpose. For placement of students, campus interviews as well as industry visits have been arranged and to look after the training activities at different places, coordinators have been appointed by the institute. Some of our degree students have been employed in multinational and other reputed companies such as Infosys Technologies Ltd., IBM, Quark Media House etc. The institute keeps in touch with various industries and call the veteran industrialists for the counselling of our students.

Guest House - A Guest House with 20 rooms(fully air-conditioned), with all the modern amenities is available in the campus.It has full furnished modern Dinning Hall. All the rooms are connected by EPABX.

Consultancy - The faculty is competent enough and undertakes the consultancy assignments for the problems related to the industries in their specialized field. The senior faculty of the institute has also been contributing towards supervising/guiding M.Tech. students, Ph.D Scholars and Research Associates.

Alumni Association - It promotes friendly relations among all members of the Association and their Alma Mater. It also enhances industry institute interaction.

Prestigious national awards/fellowships like Career Award (AICTE), Career Award (UGC) and Best Teacher Award (ISTE), INSA Visiting fellowship have been bagged by the faculty. The faculty members have been awarded some International fellowships/teaching assignments from various countries like Germany (DAAD), UK (MIT, University of Buffalo), Israel, Italy (INFN fellowship) Malaysia (Multimedia University), South Korea, Japan, Libya, Ireland, Canadian fellowships, GRE (worldwide).
