About Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University

Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University (SGGSWU), Fatehgarh Sahib is a State Private University offering courses in multiple disciplines like arts, science, commerce, management etc. It has been established under Punjab State Act 20/2008 and is a Self Financed University. It is managed by Sri Guru Granth Sahib Fourth Memorial Trust. SGGSWU has a campus spreading over an area of 136.75 acres, out of which over 80 acres is built up (3, 23,749 sq. metres). The land is on lease from Gurudwara Fateharh Sahib (SGPC, Sri Amritsar Sahib) for a minimum period of 99 years. Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib has been set up to commemorate the historic event of the 400th anniversary of the compilation and first installation of holy Sri Guru Granth Granth Sahib. SGGSWU is located at Fatehgarh Sahib, a historical and religious place sanctified by the unique martyrdom of the younger sahibzadas of Guru Gobind Singh Sahib. The uniqueness of the university is that apart from other regular courses, it focuses on intensive study/ research/teaching in the areas of World Religions, Cultures, Eastern and Western Thoughts.

Centres at SGGSWU

Guru Arjun Dev Centre For Sri Guru Granth Sahib Studies – It has been setup to carry out authentic research on the various aspects of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, to spread its message universally. Guru Granth Sahib teaches us universal brotherhood and other noble deeds which need to be followed by one and all.

 Bhai Gurdas Centre For Sikh Studies – It has been setup to carry out research in Sikh heritage, culture, philosophy, tradition, Martyrs, Sikh way of life and all related aspects of Sikh living and thinking. The Sikh Community has made glorious achievements, but these have yet to be explored in front of the world in a right context. Guru Granth Sahib contains revolutionary models which are exceptionally distinguished from the existing models in the areas of politics, economics as well as cultural. These are yet to be explored within the academic disciplines.

Guru Nanak Dev Centre For Gurmat Sangeet – It has been setup to carry out research in various aspects of Sikh Music and to prepare Encyclopaedia of Sikh Music. Gurmat Sangeet (Sikh Music) plays very significant role in spreading the pious message of Gurbani. The aim of research in Sikh Music is to explore the distinct features of Gurmat Sangeet in comparison to Indian classical music. Its potential to lead the human soul to the higher dimensions of life needs to be explored.

Facilities at SGGSWU

Hostels – The University offers separate hostel facility for boys and girls. The hostels offer all the basic amenities like 24 hours power supply, mess facility, newspapers and magazines, facilities for indoor and outdoor games like table tennis, badminton etc

Bhai Nand Lal Library - The University Library is named after a great scholar of Persian, Bhai Nand Lal ji who had the privilege of one of the fifty-two poets of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. The library has a collection of about 19240 books. It is subscribing to more than 50 research journals along with large number of electronic journals in various disciplines. The library also facilitates Online Public Access Catalogue and modern reprographic facilities.

Scholarships – The University offers various scholarships.

Some of these are:

  • SGGSWU Scholarship - Sri Guru Granth Sahib Scholarships (SGGSWU) is granted to needy and meritorious Students.
  • SGPC-Cambridge Scholarship - Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) – Cambridge Scholarship is awarded by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee to the Sabat-Surat Gursikh students for pursuing M.Phil. & Ph.D. at University of Cambridge, UK.
  • OBC Scholarship – It is a Post Matric Scholarship Scheme for Other Backward Class Students. It is a centrally sponsored scheme and only Punjab domicile students belonging to the Backward Classes are given scholarship by Punjab Government. The student must belong to the Other Backward Classes and the annual income of student’s family must not exceed Rs. 1 Lac
  • SC Scholarship – It is a Post Matric Scholarship Scheme for Scheduled Caste Students. This is a centrally sponsored scheme and only Punjab domicile students belonging to Scheduled Caste Classes are given Scholarship by Punjab Government. The students must belong to the scheduled caste/scheduled tribe and the annual income of student’s family must not exceed Rs. 2.5 Lac.

Transport - The University has its own fleet of buses that pick and drop students and faculty members from Chandigarh, Mohali, Patiala.

Sports Facilities – SGGSWU provides various sports facilities like athletics track, basketball court, volleyball court, hockey, football and cricket ground in the campus. There is also a well equipped gym and well equipped Physiotherapy laboratory for rehabilitation of players and students.

Canteen - The canteen provides lunch, snacks and beverages both to the students and staff at reasonable rates.

Hockey Academy – The Hockey Academy for girls is running at grass root level under the aegis of Physical Education Department. It is well equipped with multi gym and standardized hockey ground. Players of the academy are also facilitated with extra nutritional diet, free education and free residence.

Medical Facilities – The Campus has its own clinic with ambulance to provide medical assistance to students. A doctor is available on the campus to ensure the timely treatment. A Homeopathic doctor is also available at the campus.

Laboratories - The University has various laboratories under various departments. Some of these are - Anatomy, Physiology, Electrotherapy and Human Performance Laboratories.

National Service Scheme - National Service Scheme (NSS) is the programme run by the ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in Central Government and Higher and Technical Education in State government. NSS aims to develop the personality of students through various community services. It raises social consciousness of the students by providing them with the opportunity to work with people in the villages and slums.

NCC – The University has 4 NSS units which organize different events.
